We all wish Nas had performed Illmatic front to back last weekend at Emo’s. Credit Wu-Tang’s most lyrical swordsman for giving the people what they want: a live recitation of 1995’s classic Liquid Swords to kick off Emo’s 16th anniversary week. Method Man was smoother, ODB more charismatic, and Ghostface spit more complex slang, but true heads know GZA always had the sharpest tongue. After serving time in juvenile detention facilities, it wasn’t until he saw Johnny Cash in concert that he decided to straighten out his life. Part of an ongoing Parish residency organized by noise-loving promoters Navdo, the two-night Psych Shack brings the racket. Ringo Deathstarr began tearing up the blogosphere last year with their sticky-sweet self-titled debut EP, adding to the local shoegaze resurgence. NYC’s Soundpool continues the late-1980s nod along with local husband-and-wife duo All in the Golden Afternoon, aka Rachel Staggs and Carlos Jackson, and reverb-lovers She, Sir.
