J. Tillman
J. Tillman’s music is described as “reminiscent of the southern-gothic writings of Flannery O'Connor and the music of Nick Drake and Pete Seeger." more at www.3hive.com

Bishop Allen
I quickly donned headphones, wanting to squeeze my brain in between the bright melodies, the bouncy bass, snappy guitars, and the lyrics' 'ancient commonsense' poetics. The question is, will the songs last the replays while I wait another month for the other eleven songs? I'm highly suspicious the answer is yes. more at www.3hive.com

Michna
He's been paying his dues DJing parties in New York with tapes (yes!) and cutting remixes for Diplo (with his previous Secret Frequency Crew), Bonde Do Role, and surprisingly Jandek. Made playful by his trombone playing and use of found sounds (especially the answering machines, air hockey, and skateboards) his bass heavy pastiche work remind me of our old friend Alan Sutherland aka Land of the Loops (where ya at Al?). If you're in the market for a good slow and steady, fun groove: Michna's your man. more at www.3hive.com

Great Lakes Myth Society
based in Ann Arbor, GLMS offers up orchestrated, big rock, the kind that probably needs to be written out on sheet music in order to perform. I like "Brablec Farms" and "Across the Bridge," as both are complex yet user-friendly pop-rock gems, full of texture and imagery more at www.3hive.com

Joe Pug
Surely I'm softening in my mid-30s, but there's just something about an acoustic guitar and a single voice that brings focus to my overactive mind. Joe Pug's voice and guitar have a particular resonance in this regard. Pug is a Chicago carpenter by day and a troubadour by night. He possesses the eyes, mop, and even a hint of the vocal cords of a young Bob Dylan. more at www.3hive.com

Colour Revolt
At first pass you might not hear the Deep South in the very fuzzy guitarry sound, which actually reminds me more of Girls Against Boys and Helmet than anything to come out of the southland of late. But listen to the lyrics and you'll get a good dose of God. more at www.3hive.com
