The kung-fu obsessed Wu-Tang beatsmith is fond of sampling dusty Southern soul records but is backed live by California soul groovers Stone Mecca. If you like females and robots — specifically, female robots — then you probably love the English electro-pop quartet Ladytron. Formed in 1999 with principal members Reuben Wu, Daniel Hunt, Helen Marnie and Mira Aroyo, Ladytron soon rose to popularity with the release of the band’s first album, “604,” in 2001. Two records and seven years later, the four-piece has rolled out “Velocifero,” which they support tonight at Stubb’s.

Dan Snaith’s Caribou transformed from Amon Tobin-esque electronica to flower-child pop with last year’s gorgeous Andorra (Merge), a shimmering collection of mild psychedelic AM tunes. On the other side of the sonic spectrum, UK noise duo Fuck Buttons was all the rage at South by Southwest 08, culling primal trances from debut Street Horrrsing (ATP), cut with VU’s deathly repetition and Black Dice’s absurdity. – Austin Powell more at austinchronicle.com

Sometimes the urge to rock is so overpowering it can cause a total identity crisis: Look at Garth Brooks’ grungy alter-ego Chris Gaines (or better yet, don’t) for an example of what happens when the siren call of a power chord proves too powerful to resist. Thankfully, Austin’s premier string band White Ghost Shivers—whose members go by names like Smokebreak Slemenda and Deathmaster—already live in the land of make-believe, so adopting a new persona for this rare rock show should be a thousand times less awkward than Brooks in that Trent Reznor wig. We’re not sure what will happen when the band tosses out its ‘20s garb and unleashes its metal-head side, but it’s safe to say that headliner and Guitar Hero favorites Lions will have some formidable competition. Opener Peel—whose slacked-out debut fondly recalls a lazy, mid-’90s summer spent smoking weed and listening to Pavement—gets this party started. www.theonion.com
