“Indie-country-electro” rapper Astronautalis hasshared the stage with everyone from A Tribe Called Quest to The Polyphonic Spree to Rancid, which indicates both how seamlessly he blends his indie-rock, IDM, and hip-hop influences and howschizophrenic the resulting songs are. “Meet Me Here Later,” from his sophomore album The Mighty Ocean And Nine Dark Theaters, is as good an introduction as any: Winkingly sentimental, it comes off like El-P sitting in with Built To Spill as remixed by The Postal Service. Little Brother broke out with 2003’s The Listening, a retro manifesto that catapulted beat genius 9th Wonder to the top ranks of hip-hop producers, and followed it up with a forceful major-label debut, 2005’s The Minstrel Show. MCs Phonte and Big Pooh specialize in R&B-slanted, pop-spiked rhymes, while 9th Wonder’s skills landed him high-profile producing spots with Destiny Child and Jay-Z. It was announced earlier this year that 9th Wonder has left the group, but his absence shouldn’t put a dent in this show in support of the new Getback.

The Hold Steady has maintained a devout fan base since growing out of the legend of Minneapolis rock band Lifter Puller, and lead singer/firebrand Craig Finn makes it easy to understand why. His style trades on patently singular vocal screeds that siphon added power when the rock gears turn higher and looser, as they do on last year’s breakout Boys And Girls In America. Art Brut frontman Eddie Argos spits acidic observations like a post-punk Ray Davies, baiting hipsters with lines like “I can’t stand the sound of The Velvet Underground” while the band behind him sloshes and slams between The Libertines and Arctic Monkeys. This year’s It’s A Bit Complicated doesn’t exactly live up to its title, as Argos and his group continue on their sardonic pop path with a similar smirk. Glasgow’s 1990s sure makes a playful, crowd-pleasing racket—the kind of pleasantly ramshackle garage-y pop (similar to leader Jackie McKeown’s former group The Yummy Fur) that surely gets even better onstage.

Text this event Architecture In Helsinki might seem at first glance
to be Australia’s answer to Out Hud, but the coed ensemble also draws
bits from The Beta Band and Tom Tom Club. The sound came together on
the group’s rhythmically playful chant-along album In Case We Die, but
it’s doubly rousing onstage. After the release of Die, “creative
differences” led to the sudden departure of members Isobel Knowles and
Tara Shackell, so it’s not surprising that the recent Places Like This
represents a departure for the group. “Feather In A Baseball Cap” and
“Hold Music” have Helsinki architect Cameron Bird channeling Modest
Mouse-style vocals, though nothing on Places matches the catchiness or
immediacy of “Float On.” A Portland band pitched toward
disco-ventilated post-punk and no-wave noise, opener Glass Candy has
banged around the indie underground with a handful of releases for the
Troubleman Unlimited label. The group preens through party-starting
revisionism, lacing dance-y grooves with loose-limbed lurches and
vocals by Ida No, a jaw-dropping frontwoman on par with Debbie Harry
in her prime.

“What better band to get us ready for Halloween than Haunting Oboe Music. We’re not sure exactly how the oboe fits into the picture, but we’ll certainly give them haunting. A song like “Hawkins” (on their Myspace) with its alternating whispers and screams can get downright nightmarish as it contorts a mellow Explosions in the Sky vibe into schizo-emo frequencies. But the group is at their best when their exploding heavy At the Drive In guitars with some synth-grooves and blaring horns thrown in for an added cacophony.”
