What you’ll get at the Mohawk tonight is a musician from Israel, raised in New Jersey, who plays alt-country and soul. Eef Barzelay, most notable for his work with the band Clem Snide, is starting a brief tour here. His new album, “Lose Big,” was released this week, so he’s likely to play some hip, new tunes. Louis CK with Todd Barry

Fri. 04/04 | 7:00PM @ The Paramount Theatre (Downtown)

Doors/Bar @ 7 pm | Show @ 8 pm

8 People Like this Event.  I Like It

Louis CK is one of the best stand-ups working today, spinning hilarious, shockingly honest stories about his life and family that never fall back on shock value. (Well, except for that infamous bit about finding a barrel of duck vaginas in Chinatown.) His recent DVD Louis CK: Shameless is a riot, but fans won’t have to worry about hearing old jokes here: CK recently wrapped his newest stand-up special, Chewed Up, so expect a fresh dose of his twisted yet oddly old-fashioned comedy. Slyly sarcastic opener Todd Barry most recently delighted fans of Flight Of The Conchords with a role as a crude bongo-playing egomaniac, which should help propel sales of his new CD, From Heaven.

Priming the pump for a week’s worth of debauchery, Beauty Bar gets the buzz started for early SXSW arrivals with a crash course on some of the best bands Austin has to offer. On the outside stage, Belaire lets the sun shine in with infectious indie-tronica and huggable harmonies from last year’s Exploding, Impacting along with desert-folk troubadours Brothers And Sisters and funky art-school aces The Black And White Years. Inside, garage wunderkinds The Strange Boys headline a retro revival that includes souped-up rawk from Those Peabodys and swaggering Southern steez from Scorpion Child. Around 1 a.m., DJs from Austin, London, and Glasgow (and special guests like Yo Majesty’s Shunda K.) kick off a late-night dance party that will ensure you never make it to any of those Wednesday panels. They sounded boring anyway. Also playing: Golden Bear, AM Syndicate, {{{Sunset}}}, Murdocks, Sleeping In The Aviary, Future Clouds And Radar.

Tokyo Police Club/Til We're Blue or Destroy w/ The Laughing, Freezepop, Car Stereo...

Mon. 03/10 | 9:00PM @ The Mohawk (Red River)

39 People Like this Event.  I Like It

It’s a little late in the game to be blatantly aping The Strokes, but there’s something about Canadian outfit Tokyo Police Club’s sketchy, scattered, sloshed take on choppy indie rock that makes one wish this was the direction Casablancas and crew took after their 2001 debut. Not even clichéd lyrics about microchips and robots (peppered, of course, with sassy handclaps) can dilute the inviting dementia of Tokyo Police Club’s EPs, A Lesson In Crime and the brand-new Smith. TPC has inked a deal with Saddle Creek, which will be issuing the band’s debut full-length, Elephant Shell, next month. The group plays here as part of a launch party for new social networking site Frrvrr.com with synth-poppers Til We’re Blue Or Destroy, The Laughing, and Freezepop, followed by more mash-up magic from Car Stereo (Wars).

This party is FREE and open to the public. SXSW badges and
wristbands are not requited.
