With its chunky power chords, classic harmonies, and unabashed nerdiness (it proudly claims to make music for “smart kids, weird kids, rocket scientists, and NASA engineers”), Austin’s Built By Snow has drawn frequent comparisons to Weezer, albeit with a serious jones for the ’80s replacing Rivers Cuomo’s Buddy Holly fetish. more at austin.decider.com

Austin’s psych-rock revival can more or less be divided into two camps: shoegazers steeped in Echoplexes and druggy detachment, and garage-rock revivalists shambling blissfully toward another Summer Of Love. more at austin.decider.com

The fact that Austin dance-rock crew The Lemurs still necessitates “local band” qualifiers makes zero sense: Its recent Million Little Bits EP balances soaring club bangers and reflective morning-after ballads with enough panache to make The Killers jealous. Also overdue for a breakout is thundering space-rock outfit Ringo Deathstarr, whose amp-crackling narco-haze is as addictive as it is awe-inspiring. more at austin.decider.com

This show makes a convincing argument that Cari Palazzolo is the center of the Austin indie-rock universe: The ridiculously overbooked Belaire singer has ties to three of the four bands playing this stage, including being an official member of both toy-pop indie innocents School Police and JC & Co., the bubbly, Zombies-bitten side project of her Belaire bandmate Jason Chronis (who pulls triple duty himself in Voxtrot). more at austin.decider.com

Lovers of dry, witty movie dialogue treasure 1934’s The Thin Man, with William Powell and Myrna Loy as tippling socialite flatfoots Nick and Nora Charles. The film’s sequel smartly retains all of the elements that made the first such a delight—wry remarks, plenty of twists, and loads of gin—and even adds Jimmy Stewart to the mix in his first substantial film role. more at austin.decider.com

One of my favorite local discoveries since moving to Austin has got to be The Boxing Lesson. Every time I’ve seen them live, they stole the show. But this time they are headliners and very deserving so. They’re a little psychedelic, a little hard rock, and pretty much all awesome.

Seven-piece supergroup When Dinosaurs Ruled The Earth makes smash-punk-metal with noise-rock twitters that’s as joyous as it is punishing: With its dual drummers and various vocalists competing for the mic, it often sounds like two bands working at cross purposes, yet somehow it coalesces into a beautiful mess rather than just an ordinary one. more at austin.decider.com
