From underground dance clubs and huge events to swanky spy lounges and late-night sushi bars, dj thibault has established himself as, not only one of the most eclectic DJs in Austin, but as one of the most exciting new performers in the live music capitol of the world. He has DJed in dozens of the city's top clubs like Barcelona, Firehouse, Light, and Prague, and has performed on some of the most respected live music stages including La Zona Rosa, The Parish, Antone's, Headhunters, and even The Frank Erwin Center VIP. After quickly earning the respect of fellow Austin musicians and performers, dj thibault found himself being asked to play events featuring everything from heavy local bands like Ghostland Observatory, Clap! Ghostland Observatory has grown big in Austin and beyond with a sound that tips toward the electro-rock likes of The Rapture and VHS Or Beta—more so the latter, thanks to a penchant for vocoder effects that skew as suspect as often as they prove stirring. The duo spent most of 2007 breaking out behind the flashy grooves of Paparazzi Lightning, an album made for nightclub hedonism that naturally felt flaccid in the harsh light of day. Not taking any chances, the new Robotique Majestique amps up the hair-band posturing even further—the mix of Euro-metal yowls and oppressively cheesy ’80s synths evokes Billy Squier as remixed by The Crystal Method—which won’t win back cynics who have already dismissed the group. It should, however, make a huge splash amongst those who value style over substance—i.e., the majority of the music-buying public. Opening: Dr. Jack.

Called Austin’s buzziest band so many times the backlash is due any minute now, garage-punk trio White Denim continues to rack up the accolades, recently earning album-of-the-year honors in UK mag Artrocker (even though its “debut” still isn’t officially out yet). See them now so you can say they sold out later. One of Austin’s other many next big things, Black Before Red has the smooth-rock airs of Phoenix, yet escapes the elevator with bells, whistles, handclaps, and a seductive joie de vivre. Its 2006 debut, Belgrave To Kings Circle, was the perfect summer album for pasty-faced shut-ins, but its intended audience should more readily embrace the group’s breezy indie-rock now that cardigan weather is in full swing. Opener Haunting Oboe Music pours just about everything but its titular instrument into the mix, creating moody music too cinematic to be dismissed as “emo” (yet too melodramatic not to whisper it as an aside). Opening: The Fever Dreams.
