The Melvins have begun a second life since the addition of two-man wrecking crew Big Business, which pulls double duty as opener. Their monolithic second album together, Nude With Boots (Ipecac), is chock-full of midtempo metal dirges, tandem drum sequences, and thundering Zeppelin grooves. The sludge oozes over to Beauty Bar on Saturday with the semiannual return of Tia Carrera side project Migas and Oh, Beast! – Austin Powell

Chicago hip-hop duo The Cool Kids (Mikey Rocks and Chuck Inglish), stirred the sheets in 2007 with well-received live shows and a sleepy, bass-burbling single called “Black Mags.” This year will almost certainly be their breakout: They’ve signed to Chocolate Industries, an underground hip-hop label with releases by Money Mark, Vast Aire, and Lady Sovereign, and they have an uncommonly dexterous way of infusing boom-bap beats with clever rhymes and hipster cool. The Cool Kids will play here in support of their long-delayed debut, The Bake Sale. Opening: Free Sol, DJ Mel.

Underground hip-hop’s most lyrically verbose and enunciated wordsmith swoops down on Austin’s cerebral cortex, complete with rare spots of “Daylight” amidst the Long Island, N.Y., native’s psychotic lexicon. Recently relocated to San Francisco, the Definitive Jux staple’s a year removed from his Blockhead-produced None Shall Pass, an opaque examination of those damned failed relationships.
