Yes, it’s time to pony up again and make sure that Austin’s best source of local, independent music still has a home. But unlike some other pledge drives, this two-stage benefit for KVRX Radio rewards altruism with a lineup featuring some of Austin’s best bands, which beats the hell out of a tote bag. From the charmingly aloof pop of Yellow Fever to the ragged Big Star-evoking Lomita to the dusty, antediluvian folk of Peter And The Wolf to The Mercers’ blend of new-wave influences and barroom bluster, you’re unlikely to find a better primer on Austin’s biggest up-and-comers, while wild cards like Spanish-speaking Brit-poppers Maneja Beto, synth-flavored cut-ups Fancy Feast (featuring members of Belaire), and “foot fetish funk band” Foot Patrol keep things interesting. Charity has its rewards. www.theonion.com

With their shimmering horn section and grooves so tightly wound James Brown would never dock them a red cent, it’s no wonder Austin’s Grupo Fantasma was handpicked by Prince to be his backing band for several high-profile gigs this past year, including after-parties for both the Super Bowl and the Golden Globes. That’s right: While you were out cooing over the latest indie-rock group to get a blurb in Gorilla Vs. Bear, the Grupo was rubbing shoulders with the likes of Marc Anthony and His Royal Purple Badness for a roomful of movie stars. Maybe now it’s time for you to catch on to what the hoi polloi is already hip to and check out Austin’s sauciest world-beat/party band.
