The 30th anniversary of Pecan Street keeps it weird with five stages and 20 locals. Saturday beams with Bill Baird’s Sunset, the Lemurs, Ume, Attack Formation, Daniel Francis Doyle, and more before setting off fireworks (literally) with Grupo Fantasma at 8pm. Sunday sets an ethnic vibe with a Latin stage, St. Edward’s Ballet Folklorico, and Sabaya Belly Dancers, plus a country stage for good measure (the Moonhangers, Texas Sapphires, et al.). Not since the Ramones has there been a worthwhile band that required such a limited mental capacity to enjoy. Fu Manchu is about loud riffs, stomping rhythms, and not much else. The SoCal band’s shows follow the same philosophy, allowing anyone to tune in, turn on, and rock out in a completely unpretentious way to heavy, balls-to-the-wall rock. As an added bonus, their appearance at the Mohawk is practically guaranteed to give you a contact high. Opener Burning Brides rides a strange line between scenes, flirting with radio-ready alt-rock, vaguely stoner-ish metal, and the occasional slight nod to goth. Also playing: Max Cady.
