Texas band Two Tons of Steel might be described as equal parts Elvis Presley and Elvis Costello, with a liberal dose of Buddy Holly and a dollop of The Ramones. It’s a one-of-a-kind sound that bandleader and frontman Kevin Geil likes to call “countrybilly.”

It’s also a sound that’s boosted the group to renown as the face of Texas music: with its live performance at historical Gruene Hall; of Two Tons of Steel in the internationally released IMAX film “Texas: The Big Picture”; its performance of King of a One Horse Town in the roots-country documentary that screens continuously at Nashville’s Country Music Hall of Fame; its swing tune as part of Lone Star beer’s ongoing regional radio campaign; and by becoming Texas music ambassadors to ecstatic fans in Cuba and at sold-out shows throughout Europe.
Two Tons of Steel continues as an institution at Texas’ famed Gruene Hall, where its annual Two Ton Tuesdays summer series draws 12,000 fans, and as a popular act at Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry. For eight years, it’s been voted Best Country Band by the San Antonio Current, its hometown weekly.

On Wednesday, December 31, 2008, you're invited to play a creative role in transforming downtown Austin. The stage will be the city's plazas, parks, streets, storefronts, and building facades. Indoor venues will be settings for a palette of performing and visual arts.

First Night Austin is a public celebration of the arts that revives the ancient tradition of marking the passage of time with art, ritual, and festivity. It is a family-friendly, affordable, and alcohol free New Year's Eve festival. Join us on December 31st and help create a new tradition for Austin that celebrates the culturally rich and artistically diverse place we call home.

Don't be confused by the name of the event. First Night Austin 2009 takes place on the last day of this year, December 31, 2008. We will look ahead collectively to welcome the New Year with hope and optimism.

The Bush Retirement Party

On January 17, 2009, all of Austin will be celebrating the end of the current administration and the inauguration of a new president. The teeming multitudes of happy celebrants will flock to Austin to watch live music, listen to guest speakers, and heave a colossal and communal sigh of relief. A portion of proceeds from this charity extravaganza will benefit U.S. soldiers that have served in Iraq. Individuals with a thirst for change will flock to Austin from all over the world to be a part of the excitement and to contribute to the cause!

When: George W. Bush’s last Saturday in office (January 17, 2009)

Where: Austin, Texas.

What: Best damn party in eight years! Live music performances, guest speakers, other entertainment

Who: Thousands of jubilant ticket holders celebrating the end of the Bush administration

Why: To celebrate the inauguration of a new president, and to benefit of U.S. soldiers that have served in Iraq.
