The one-time heroes of Texas rock, The Toadies were supposed to be huge. Their singles “Possum Kingdom” and “Tyler” were all over national radio and MTV (“Kingdom” was even immortalized in Xbox’s Guitar Hero II), and in mid-’90s Dallas there was no band more well-liked than this batch of ordinary Fort Worth kids—the ultimate in locals-made-good. Unfortunately, the band couldn’t take the pressures of success, and following the critical and commercial failure of Hell Below/Stars Above (which even an Elliott Smith cameo couldn’t save), the band was officially relegated to the post-grunge dustbin when bassist Lisa Umbarger decided she’d had enough. These days, singer Vaden “Todd” Lewis spins his wheels in The Burden Brothers, but reformed his old group last year (with Baboon bassist Mark Hughes standing in for Umbarger) for a few successful reunion shows that have apparently reinvigorated the band.

via Austin Sound:
“What better band to get us ready for Halloween than Haunting Oboe Music. We’re not sure exactly how the oboe fits into the picture, but we’ll certainly give them haunting. A song like “Hawkins” (on their Myspace) with its alternating whispers and screams can get downright nightmarish as it contorts a mellow Explosions in the Sky vibe into schizo-emo frequencies. But the group is at their best when their exploding heavy At the Drive In guitars with some synth-grooves and blaring horns thrown in for an added cacophony.”

7:00 PM - Loudon Wainwright III/9:30 PM - Loudon Wainwright III

Wed. 10/17 | 7:00PM @ Cactus Cafe (Campus to 183)

Loudon Wainwright III has been recording in relative obscurity since the early ‘70s, unable or unwilling to adapt his darkly comical folk into something more commercial. Thank goodness. Wainwright has been more visible in recent years, as 2001’s Last Man on Earth met with effusive praise for its painfully honest take on the death of his mother. He also got a boost from a pair of unlikely sources: life as a television actor on the short-lived, geekily followed series Undeclared, and the rising-star status of his son Rufus Wainwright. Wainwright is touring in support of the new Strange Weirdos, the official soundtrack to the hit film Knocked Up—which just so happens to have been created by Wainwright’s old Undeclared patron Judd Apatow.
