A slow-minded sludge band big into the likes of Blue Cheer and The Groundhogs, Dead Meadow cooks up a stew of murky psychedelia and bluesy metal. After a couple of unremarkable full-lengths released by Fugazi’s Joe Lally on his Tolotta imprint, the D.C.-area band found its voice with 2003’s Shivering King And Others, its Matador debut. But where Shivering King oozes languid gravity and atmosphere, the follow-up, Feathers, tends to drift too far into the mellower end of aimlessness. Matador just released Dead Meadow’s fifth full-length, Old Growth, last week. It would be hard to argue that opener Black Mountain is doing anything original, but the drone-y psych-rock outfit’s nods to Zeppelin, The Velvet Underground, Neil Young, and others on recent sophomore album In The Future seem to be more about homage and respect than just jumping on the throwback bandwagon. Blood On The Wall opens with grimy, graffiti-smeared art-rock.

“What better band to get us ready for Halloween than Haunting Oboe Music. We’re not sure exactly how the oboe fits into the picture, but we’ll certainly give them haunting. A song like “Hawkins” (on their Myspace) with its alternating whispers and screams can get downright nightmarish as it contorts a mellow Explosions in the Sky vibe into schizo-emo frequencies. But the group is at their best when their exploding heavy At the Drive In guitars with some synth-grooves and blaring horns thrown in for an added cacophony.”
