Saturday night of South by Southwest 08, Downtown patrons filed into Cedar Street Courtyard for a casual drink. Within minutes, A Place to Bury Strangers cleared the place with an absolutely deafening set of Joy Division-inspired shoegaze from last year’s self-titled debut. The effect was unintentional. Guitarist/singer Oliver Ackermann custom-designs the NYC-based trio’s sonic effects, but beneath the grating layers of distortion are bona fide pop songs. Locals the Boxing Lesson and Ume open. Earplugs required. – Austin Powell

AA-S Best Bet – Ladytron:
If you like females and robots — specifically, female robots — then you probably love the English electro-pop quartet Ladytron. Formed in 1999 with principal members Reuben Wu, Daniel Hunt, Helen Marnie and Mira Aroyo, Ladytron soon rose to popularity with the release of the band’s first album, “604,” in 2001. Two records and seven years later, the four-piece has rolled out “Velocifero,” which they support tonight at Stubb’s.

Within two years, The Bravery evolved from a fledgling band of college friends mixing their first record on an iMac to a buzzed-about group with a big-label deal—no surprise considering how effectively The Bravery married the new-wave rock revival headed by The Killers and pithy garage stance popularized by The Strokes. The Bravery can be a little cloying, but that hasn’t seemed to bother those who don’t worry about such things, and, on last year’s The Sun And The Moon, the group isn’t afraid to try out a couple of new ideas—including (unfortunately) taking itself seriously. Also playing: The Switches.
