Since Lewis Black’s enraged rise to fame has occurred while George W. Bush has been in office, it’s tough to tell what will happen when there aren’t complete buffoons running wild in the White House; but chances are pretty good that his war-on-stupidity character is going to have a place in America for quite some time, particularly now that obvious mentor George Carlin has passed on. Of course, Black plays the role so well because he’s playing himself, an educated guy who is so pissed off about dumb people and things that he can’t help but rant. Black appears here behind his recently released book, Me Of Little Faith, which turns Black’s ire against religion.

The earnest punk stalwarts in Rancid have steered out of the big-scale success they courted in the mid-’90s. After leading the way for chart-bound punk with 1995’s …And Out Come The Wolves, the group chewed through the pop strings yanked by so many of its peers with a resolutely un-commercial follow-up of rapid-fire aggression more akin to Bad Brains and Minor Threat than The Clash. Rancid’s most recent disc, 2003’s Indestructible, ditched the hookless hardcore for a more manic mix of ska, rockabilly, and even gospel—all roughed up and ground out by a rare punk band that sounds more alive now than it did then. The band returns here backed by new drummer Branden Steineckert (The Used) with a new, still-untitled studio album, its first in nearly five years. Opening: Lower Class Brats, Ill Spent Youth.

Based on the completely bonkers response to M.I.A.’s stew of hip-hop, reggae, Indian and African beats at the Austin City Limits Music Festival and a November show at UT’s Hogg Auditorium, it’s not too surprising that this show is technically sold out.

Al Jourgensen is disassembling the Ministry pulpit after more than a quarter-century, but the final tour is going out hellfire-and-brimstone-style. Ministry’s recent (but certainly not last) CD, Cover Up, unleashed trademark vocal menace and punishing beat on “Bang a Gong” and other flashback favorites, a good indicator of what you’ll hear between “N.W.O.” and “Just One Fix.” (Ah, for the days of “Stainless Steel Providers”!)
