Dilated Peoples, Aceyalone, the Alchemist: For the multimedia Fresh Rhymes and Videotape tour, Harlem’s 88-Keys join forces with three L.A. acts all deeply rooted in the underground. Aceyalone, a founding member of the Freestyle Fellowship, comes frantic and relentless with latest Lightning Strikes. Producer the Alchemist sizzles a résumé that includes work with Mobb Deep, Ghostface, and Jadakiss. Headlining trio Dilated Peoples found success with Kanye “This Way” as well as last year’s The Release Party. – Chase Hoffberger More at austinchronicle.com

AA-S Best Bet – Ladytron:
If you like females and robots — specifically, female robots — then you probably love the English electro-pop quartet Ladytron. Formed in 1999 with principal members Reuben Wu, Daniel Hunt, Helen Marnie and Mira Aroyo, Ladytron soon rose to popularity with the release of the band’s first album, “604,” in 2001. Two records and seven years later, the four-piece has rolled out “Velocifero,” which they support tonight at Stubb’s.

Two nights of Minneapolis duo Atmosphere on the outside stage make for some of the best live hip-hop around. As Rhymesayers royalty, MC Slug brings his no-holds-barred storytelling to life over DJ Ant’s array of beats, ranging from the backyard breaks of 2007’s Strictly Leakage EP to ’02’s morose God Loves Ugly. Their sixth LP, When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold, is a steady dose of both moods. – Chase Hoffberger more at austinchronicle.com

Based on the completely bonkers response to M.I.A.’s stew of hip-hop, reggae, Indian and African beats at the Austin City Limits Music Festival and a November show at UT’s Hogg Auditorium, it’s not too surprising that this show is technically sold out.

Dan Snaith’s Caribou transformed from Amon Tobin-esque electronica to flower-child pop with last year’s gorgeous Andorra (Merge), a shimmering collection of mild psychedelic AM tunes. On the other side of the sonic spectrum, UK noise duo Fuck Buttons was all the rage at South by Southwest 08, culling primal trances from debut Street Horrrsing (ATP), cut with VU’s deathly repetition and Black Dice’s absurdity. – Austin Powell more at austinchronicle.com

Priming the pump for a week’s worth of debauchery, Beauty Bar gets the buzz started for early SXSW arrivals with a crash course on some of the best bands Austin has to offer. On the outside stage, Belaire lets the sun shine in with infectious indie-tronica and huggable harmonies from last year’s Exploding, Impacting along with desert-folk troubadours Brothers And Sisters and funky art-school aces The Black And White Years. Inside, garage wunderkinds The Strange Boys headline a retro revival that includes souped-up rawk from Those Peabodys and swaggering Southern steez from Scorpion Child. Around 1 a.m., DJs from Austin, London, and Glasgow (and special guests like Yo Majesty’s Shunda K.) kick off a late-night dance party that will ensure you never make it to any of those Wednesday panels. They sounded boring anyway. Also playing: Golden Bear, AM Syndicate, {{{Sunset}}}, Murdocks, Sleeping In The Aviary, Future Clouds And Radar.

Ghostland Observatory has grown big in Austin and beyond with a sound that tips toward the electro-rock likes of The Rapture and VHS Or Beta—more so the latter, thanks to a penchant for vocoder effects that skew as suspect as often as they prove stirring. The duo spent most of 2007 breaking out behind the flashy grooves of Paparazzi Lightning, an album made for nightclub hedonism that naturally felt flaccid in the harsh light of day. Not taking any chances, the new Robotique Majestique amps up the hair-band posturing even further—the mix of Euro-metal yowls and oppressively cheesy ’80s synths evokes Billy Squier as remixed by The Crystal Method—which won’t win back cynics who have already dismissed the group. It should, however, make a huge splash amongst those who value style over substance—i.e., the majority of the music-buying public. Opening: Dr. Jack.

If Mexico City’s Café Tacuba is the Spanglish Radiohead, their native tour mates of old – Molotov – are Judas Priest. With Tacuba having rocked La Zona Rosa in November, their metallic brethren storm in behind them, both acts having shared a titanic bill there once with Ely Guerra. Rumors of the quartet’s breakup might explain no follow-up to 2004’s covers disc, Con Todo Respeto. Their “Rock Me Amadeus,” classico. – Raoul Hernandez

New York City label Daptone does little to differentiate itself from the kind of record company that might have thrived in, say, 1968, back when soul 45s spun scratchily in bedrooms and jukeboxes. Sharon Jones, the label’s current figurehead, pumps out sweet, sweaty funk that sounds like it might have come from unheard sessions by Marva Whitney, Ann Peebles, or Marie Queenie Lyons. After channeling James Brown on their first album and Fela Kuti on their second, Sharon Jones And The Dap-Kings continue to extend their mastery of retro R&B on album number three, 100 Days, 100 Nights. This time, the band dabbles in slow-simmering gospel, and while 100 Days,
100 Nights doesn’t pop with sweaty passion like The Dap-Kings’ more
memorable work, the record retains a ripped-from-the-past vibe that’s
astonishing in and of itself. Songs like the title track, “Tell Me,” and “Something’s Changed” don’t just sound like they’ve been lost in the Stax vault for the last 40 years; they sound like they’ve matured in isolation, developing flavors that didn’t exist in 1967. Opening: The Ivan Milev Band.

breaking hip-hop producer RZA declares war on analog suckas with Digi Snacks (Koch), his third LP as superhero alter ego Bobby Digital. The kung-fu obsessed Wu-Tang beatsmith is fond of sampling dusty Southern soul records but is backed live by California soul groovers Stone Mecca. As Bobby Digital, RZA spits bizarro non sequitur rhymes in his trademark staccato flow: “I talk with the awkward slang, I walk with the Wu-Tang.” – Thomas Fawcett more at austinchronicle.com
