Ebony Bones
Miss Bones mixes up funk, rap, electronica and fancy dress, and the explosive result is love-it-or-hate-it. more at www.guardian.co.uk

Max Tundra
This year has bubbled and bleeped with the sound of bedroom electronica that harks back to the past, but the third album by Max Tundra - aka London producer Ben Jacobs - is the most joyful of all. It is an experimental album on paper, running, cellos, guitars and trumpets through a Commodore Amiga. more at www.guardian.co.uk

Lila Downs
Lila Downs has always liked to surprise. Born to a Scottish-American father and Mexican-Indian mother, and brought up in both Mexico and the US, she started out by mixing Mexican styles with American folk-blues and jazz, before moving on to the explore the Mexican blues, the Cancion Ranchera bar-room ballads. more at www.guardian.co.uk

Red Light Company
Meccano is surging, dynamic, built by indie boys for arenas, the sort of anthemic fist-waver gloom-rock bands go for when they want to convey triumph-over-adversity or majestic sorrow. It's powerful yet hook-laden, and the more we play it, the more we can't believe they went on tour as support to Editors, not because they didn't deserve to, but because they threaten to eclipse them – and White Lies for that matter - as Britain's premier new exponents of elegiac pop-metal. more at www.guardian.co.uk

The Bronx
Certainly the LA punk mob have a free-spirited approach to life – as rebellious and American as the Stooges or Jack Kerouac – and every bit as compelling. more at www.guardian.co.uk

To The Bones
No, what they are is fast and hard and ... hard to define, fast. We were going to say they were a good, old-fashioned heavy rock unit, but that makes you think of Thin Lizzy's barnstorming boogie, and they're not that. more at www.guardian.co.uk

Cage the Elephant
for music that is aggressive and raw, and for behaviour that is "unpredictable" and "wild". They've been attracting all the right indie radio people and won tour supports with everyone from Queens of the Stone Age to Foals. They've got a screechy singer, while the band whip up the proverbial electric storm more at www.guardian.co.uk

Samba de Rainha
The band feature five drummers and percussionists, banging away at everything from a conventional kit to a series of hand drums, along with guitar and the tiny cavaquinho. more at www.guardian.co.uk

Those Dancing Days
Of all the post-Cardigans Scandi-indie-popsters, TDD seem like the surest bet. more at www.guardian.co.uk

Ox.Eagle.Lion.Man
Everything about Ox.Eagle.Lion.Man is contrived to make timid pop-indie fans run for cover. more at www.guardian.co.uk
