Priming the pump for a week’s worth of debauchery, Beauty Bar gets the buzz started for early SXSW arrivals with a crash course on some of the best bands Austin has to offer. On the outside stage, Belaire lets the sun shine in with infectious indie-tronica and huggable harmonies from last year’s Exploding, Impacting along with desert-folk troubadours Brothers And Sisters and funky art-school aces The Black And White Years. Inside, garage wunderkinds The Strange Boys headline a retro revival that includes souped-up rawk from Those Peabodys and swaggering Southern steez from Scorpion Child. Around 1 a.m., DJs from Austin, London, and Glasgow (and special guests like Yo Majesty’s Shunda K.) kick off a late-night dance party that will ensure you never make it to any of those Wednesday panels. They sounded boring anyway. Also playing: Golden Bear, AM Syndicate, {{{Sunset}}}, Murdocks, Sleeping In The Aviary, Future Clouds And Radar.

Called Austin’s buzziest band so many times the backlash is due any minute now, garage-punk trio White Denim continues to rack up the accolades, recently earning album-of-the-year honors in UK mag Artrocker (even though its “debut” still isn’t officially out yet). See them now so you can say they sold out later. One of Austin’s other many next big things, Black Before Red has the smooth-rock airs of Phoenix, yet escapes the elevator with bells, whistles, handclaps, and a seductive joie de vivre. Its 2006 debut, Belgrave To Kings Circle, was the perfect summer album for pasty-faced shut-ins, but its intended audience should more readily embrace the group’s breezy indie-rock now that cardigan weather is in full swing. Opener Haunting Oboe Music pours just about everything but its titular instrument into the mix, creating moody music too cinematic to be dismissed as “emo” (yet too melodramatic not to whisper it as an aside). Opening: The Fever Dreams.

A legend who continues to gain historical weight, recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominee Afrika Bambaataa was an early-’80s visionary who gave the Bronx-bombing hip-hop scene a dose of Kraftwerk sheen on “Planet Rock,” one of the most significant hip-hop singles ever recorded. During his heyday, he gave rap a sense of science-fiction space fancy, calling on new-wave electro as much as funk, and he even helped shepherd in rap-rock with “World Destruction,” a collaboration between Bambaataa’s Time Zone project and John Lydon that predated even the up “Walk This Way.” Just as notable as Bambaataa’s ace selection skill in his wowing fashion sense, which often runs toward expansive and robe-intensive. Also appearing: Brownout!, DJ Manny, Bigface.

Yes, it’s time to pony up again and make sure that Austin’s best source of local, independent music still has a home. But unlike some other pledge drives, this two-stage benefit for KVRX Radio rewards altruism with a lineup featuring some of Austin’s best bands, which beats the hell out of a tote bag. From the charmingly aloof pop of Yellow Fever to the ragged Big Star-evoking Lomita to the dusty, antediluvian folk of Peter And The Wolf to The Mercers’ blend of new-wave influences and barroom bluster, you’re unlikely to find a better primer on Austin’s biggest up-and-comers, while wild cards like Spanish-speaking Brit-poppers Maneja Beto, synth-flavored cut-ups Fancy Feast (featuring members of Belaire), and “foot fetish funk band” Foot Patrol keep things interesting. Charity has its rewards. www.theonion.com
Ghosthustler @ The Mohawk
Tue. 08/21 | 9:00PM @ The Mohawk (Downtown)
6 People Like this Event. I Like It share
Denton’s skuzzy synth-bangers Ghosthustler were already Next Big Things by the time they’d played their first show, with the funked-up glam grenade “Parking Lot Nights” splattered across every taste-making blog of note seemingly within minutes of being posted to its MySpace page. The band has a similarly sleazy, Daft-Punk-is-playing-at-your-house vibe as that other local electro band with “Ghost” in its name, which means you should probably catch tiny club gigs like this one (part of The Mohawk’s monthly residency program) while you still can.
