Shearwater w/ wye oak, jennifer o'connor

Like many things, the cinematic soundscape that Shearwater create pay heavy rewards to the patient, attentative listener. Founded in 1999 by Jonathan Meiburg and Will Sheff of Okkervil River, Shearwater was initially designed to merely be an outlet to share quieter songs that the two were working on. But after putting together five full-length albums, including 2006's critically acclaimed Palo Santo and the brilliant follow-up Rook, Shearwater are now a main attraction. See them on Thursday night at Mohawk with Wye Oak and Jennifer O'Conner.

Emo's 16th Anniversary Week: with Mudhoney, OM and special guests The Crackpipes

Emo's wraps up their anniversary week on Saturday night in style withthe influential Seattle grunge band Mudhoney. Before Nirvana began to make a name for themselves, Mudhoney began clearing the way for the new genre that would eventually become one of the biggest musical phenomenons of the 1990s. And though they would not reach the heights of fame of their Seattle-based peers, Mudhoney were at least partially responsible for the groundswell that made Kurt Cobain an era-defining icon. Opening: OM, The Crackpipes.

Click “I Like It!” to win free tickets!

And hey, Men’s Fitness just rated South Padre Island one of America’s 10 Best Beaches!

A half-mile across at its widest, so you can almost spit a guitar pick from bay to Gulf. The Island is a cool coastal town with modern luxury amenities, protected from smothering development by nationally protected, expansive dune preserves. In addition to being a fantastic host for SPI Music Fest, South Padre is always a welcome tropical escape in the late fall.

At SPI Music Fest, you can jam all day long and into the night to an awesome lineup of international artists. And if you want to grab a personal intermission from the music, it’s all here – a swim in warm Gulf waters, a long nap on a secluded beach, an ocean speedboat blast, a beach gear shopping spree, or a bay fishing trip that might land you a world record trout or red.

Got kids? Good ones, bad ones, tall ones, short ones – bring ‘em on! Most SPI Music Fest venues are family-friendly, and the Island has lots to do for the people who look like us, only smaller. Mini golf, kiddie rides that they’ll love…movies, surf lessons, and even sand castle experts who’ll make the kids’ creations actually look like something. Dig it.

If you like to eat – and who doesn’t? – South Padre sports over 60 restaurants with all types of cuisine. Get your cheeseburgers in paradise, hit a fancy joint where waiters know how to pronounce “Pinot”, or simply devour mounds of fresh seafood just pulled from the Gulf. If you’re a landlocked grub like most of us, the marine feast goes down as easy and often as the great music! And after the shows end for the night, a few after-hours hotspots welcome those still thirsty for more.

Late fall on South Padre? Normally low 80s daytime with a gentle Gulf breeze, surf temp in the mid to high 70s. In short, pretty darn perfect and we’re betting way better than where you are sitting right now.

So, c’mon, get your Fest on and book it now! SPI Music Fest 2008 is right around the corner, and we’d hate to have so much fun without you!
