Asobi Seksu (formed in 2004) is a New York City, United States based dream pop/shoegaze band. Singer Yuki Chikudate often incorporates Japanese lyrics into her songs. The band’s name in Japanese consists of two words, "asobi" meaning "play" or "for fun", and "sekkusu" the Japanese imported word for"sex" . Their sound has been said to draw influence from the shoegazing movement of the late 1980s to early 1990s, which was coined to describe the textured and effects-heavy sound of alternative rock in that era. The band consists of Yuki Chikudate (singing|vocals), James Hanna (guitar, vocals), Haji (bass guitar|bass) and Ben Shapiro (drum kit|drums). Asobi Seksu released their eponymous debut album in 2004. The band regrouped with a new rhythm section for their second album, Citrus, which was recorded in Gigantic Studios, New York City with producer Chris Zane. One Little Indian Records re-released the band’s first album Asobi Seksu and the follow-up Citrus in 2006. The band changed its name to Asobi Seksu from the previous name, sportf*ck, when they signed to their current label. According to the band’s official website "James and Yuki have almost completed writing songs for the new record and will be hitting the studio, once again with producer Chris Zane, this summer (2008). The new album will be released on Polyvinyl Record Co., the band’s new US label." www.asobiseksu.com Listen at Last.fm

They have plenty of other tricks up their collective sleeve, including throbbing eighth-note, alterna-rock basslines, Nirvana/Pixies dynamics, and a killer backbeat. Stylistically, Asobi Seksu are dead on – they allude to a-million-and-one-bands I adore and never sound exactly like any one of them. more at tinymixtapes.com

any band that has a true presence at the lead-singer position has a leg up on the competition and can get away with wearing its influences on its sleeves. This is the case with Asobi Seksu (Japanese for "play sex"). more at tinymixtapes.com

Yuki Chikudate is a hopeless romantic, damaged and done wrong by the weird arc of love. The feelings that remain vital are unpredictable free radicals; they come out in couplets of both Japanese and English, glomming onto the spiny keels and shimmering dream-pop textures that wash over Asobi Seksu's self-titled Friendly Fire debut. The usual suspects crackle through Seksu in big honking waves, but there are also little moments of light-- whether in the varied arrangements or Yuki's bilingual lead vocals-- that stipple the set with unique enough sunspots. more at www.pitchforkmedia.com

What I hear in the music is a blend of psychedelia, 80s pop, and lots of that wonderful early 90s music that I call "brightwave," but I guess the common term is shoegazer--music like Cocteau Twins, Autumn's Grey Solace, or Lush. more at www.amazon.com

There's plenty of pop tunes here, but there's also enough self expression and leftfield rambling to make this an album of real interest.more at musicomh.com
