The Austin TX-based band AM Syndicate formed in the spring of 2004 from the remaining members of the art-rock project Adolfo's Reversal. AM Syndicate's sound is a constantly evolving musical experiment - both catchy and challenging - which is often described as a cross between the Arcade Fire and the Animal Collective. They count among their influences: Blonde Redhead, Simon and Garfunkel, Lady Tron, Neutral Milk Hotel, Radiohead, and The Brian Jonestown Massacre. AM Syndicate played The Wall of Sound Music Festival in '05 and '06, CMJ Music Festival '06 and SXSW '07. Core members are guitarist/vocalist Omar Chavez, drummer Vincent Durcan, "percussionista, keyboardist/sequencer" Golfball (yes, this is her name), and keyboardist Cindy Kim. The group's first full-length debut album, Empire (recorded by Jason Ward and released in 2005 through Chicago-based Sick Room Records) met with both critical and popular praise, being deemed the "first great record of 2006" by the UK's Drowned in Sound and consistently charting in the top 30 on college radio playlists. Their sophomore effort, the Love EP (recorded by Erik Wofford), is expected to be released in 2007.

Priming the pump for a week’s worth of debauchery, Beauty Bar gets the buzz started for early SXSW arrivals with a crash course on some of the best bands Austin has to offer. On the outside stage, Belaire lets the sun shine in with infectious indie-tronica and huggable harmonies from last year’s Exploding, Impacting along with desert-folk troubadours Brothers And Sisters and funky art-school aces The Black And White Years. Inside, garage wunderkinds The Strange Boys headline a retro revival that includes souped-up rawk from Those Peabodys and swaggering Southern steez from Scorpion Child. Around 1 a.m., DJs from Austin, London, and Glasgow (and special guests like Yo Majesty’s Shunda K.) kick off a late-night dance party that will ensure you never make it to any of those Wednesday panels. They sounded boring anyway. Also playing: Golden Bear, AM Syndicate, {{{Sunset}}}, Murdocks, Sleeping In The Aviary, Future Clouds And Radar.

Emo's Free Week! PROM NITE / FACELESS WEREWOLVES / JERUSALEM / AM SYNDICATE
Thu. 01/03 | 8:00PM @ Emo's (Downtown)

Coming from a scene that’s equally steeped in snarling punk and image-conscious dance-rock, Prom Nite walks between the two camps like a KGB spy, spitting gruff invective over post-punk skronk and the occasional burst of synthesizer. While it may be too eager to please for the ‘77-heads and too pissed-off for the danceteria types, Prom Nite’s recent Where Is It? There Is It! offers plenty of arguments for meeting in the middle for a glorious, bloody scrum. The scratch-happy hepcats in Faceless Werewolves are a lot like those pretty Japanese schoolgirls in Battle Royale: kittenish on the outside, homicidal on the inside. The group’s sparse, guitar-heavy formula (no bass allowed) takes equal stylistic cues from The Stooges and the riot grrrls. Opener AM Syndicate marries the polyrhythmic propulsion of Krautrock to the adventurous angular stabs of Blonde Redhead, as heard on the recent Liberation. Also playing: Jerusalem, Magnet School.

It’s time to shake off those back-to-school nerves. Austin indie-pop fivepiece Peel headlines inside with Vancouver’s White White Light and the local Sad Accordions. Outside, Belaire fills your dance card, along with Austin’s AM Syndicate and Future Clouds & Radar. Here’s hoping class doesn’t start on Tuesday. – Darcie Stevens
