Belaire

HOMETOWN:
Austin, TX
MYSPACE:
myspace.com/belaire

Belaire is a synth-prog-pop band from Austin, TX all about making some good music and colorful visuals. We come from previous & current projects including Fancy Feast, Voxtrot, and Arkay. Cari and Winston Reed Chapman came together in 2004, later adding Christa and Jason that summer. We played our first show that winter with Winston, but unfortunately he left for Denton, TX soon thereafter, presenting a distance problem. We were then lucky enough to add Matt to the crew, thanks to Jason (both are in Voxtrot) in February 2005. Since then, we've put out a four-song self-titled EP, four-song 7 inch entitled "Haunted Castle" (Indierect Records), and are about to release "Exploding, Impacting" - our first full length LP due out July 6th!

Priming the pump for a week’s worth of debauchery, Beauty Bar gets the buzz started for early SXSW arrivals with a crash course on some of the best bands Austin has to offer. On the outside stage, Belaire lets the sun shine in with infectious indie-tronica and huggable harmonies from last year’s Exploding, Impacting along with desert-folk troubadours Brothers And Sisters and funky art-school aces The Black And White Years. Inside, garage wunderkinds The Strange Boys headline a retro revival that includes souped-up rawk from Those Peabodys and swaggering Southern steez from Scorpion Child. Around 1 a.m., DJs from Austin, London, and Glasgow (and special guests like Yo Majesty’s Shunda K.) kick off a late-night dance party that will ensure you never make it to any of those Wednesday panels. They sounded boring anyway. Also playing: Golden Bear, AM Syndicate, {{{Sunset}}}, Murdocks, Sleeping In The Aviary, Future Clouds And Radar.

Yes, it’s time to pony up again and make sure that Austin’s best source of local, independent music still has a home. But unlike some other pledge drives, this two-stage benefit for KVRX Radio rewards altruism with a lineup featuring some of Austin’s best bands, which beats the hell out of a tote bag. From the charmingly aloof pop of Yellow Fever to the ragged Big Star-evoking Lomita to the dusty, antediluvian folk of Peter And The Wolf to The Mercers’ blend of new-wave influences and barroom bluster, you’re unlikely to find a better primer on Austin’s biggest up-and-comers, while wild cards like Spanish-speaking Brit-poppers Maneja Beto, synth-flavored cut-ups Fancy Feast (featuring members of Belaire), and “foot fetish funk band” Foot Patrol keep things interesting. Charity has its rewards. www.theonion.com
