If new song “You’re Gone” is any indication, Brothers & Sisters’ upcoming release adds a shot of electricity to the swaying Austin eightpiece, fleshing out the Byrdsian group’s sound. New 1960s-pop supertrio Ripe, equal parts Ugly Beats, Nervous Exits, and White Heat peels slowly. Local reverb lovers the Strange Attractors come out after dark with last summer’s psychedelic self-titled debut, and the raucous Golden Boys pass around the bottle. – Darcie Stevens

All roars and manes, Lions blends heavy riffs and explosive attitude for a head-twisting take on ye olde denim rock, with guitars so eminently shred-worthy that the band’s “Metal Heavy Lady” was chosen for inclusion on Guitar Hero III. The band’s debut full-length, No Generation, is a mix of explosive psychedelia and Texas-sized riffs, like a tab of LSD chased with Southern Comfort. The similarly acid-fried Brothers And Sisters heads further west and gets lost in the desert with Gram Parsons, while A Few Nice Things is less about expanding the mind than kicking it in the gutter with its Faces-derived blooze and glam sleaze. Gloom-rockers The Strange Attractors combine Suicide’s post-apocalyptic throb with proto-punk nihilism, while the murderously cool male-female interplay of Alright Tonight should inspire plenty of dirty dancing.

Blogged-about indie-rockers, legendary punks, and mobile dance parties: This year’s Fun Fun Fun Fest has it all, including a headlining reunion show from the late, lamented Murder City Devils that should have the whole music world’s eyes on Waterloo Park this weekend. But it’s not just nostalgia acts (although there are plenty of veterans like Angry Samoans, The Saints, and Lifetime whose LPs make up the backbone of many a punk’s record collection): This year’s Fest boasts a who’s who of the here and now, including buzzworthy names like The New Pornographers, Against Me!, Okkervil River, Girl Talk, Battles, Ted Leo, Of Montreal, and Explosions In The Sky. While you’re out basking in the crisp autumn weather (reason enough alone to make Fx4 the year’s most enjoyable outdoor festival) take a moment to thank the rock gods that you live in Austin. They like to feel appreciated.

Priming the pump for a week’s worth of debauchery, Beauty Bar gets the buzz started for early SXSW arrivals with a crash course on some of the best bands Austin has to offer. On the outside stage, Belaire lets the sun shine in with infectious indie-tronica and huggable harmonies from last year’s Exploding, Impacting along with desert-folk troubadours Brothers And Sisters and funky art-school aces The Black And White Years. Inside, garage wunderkinds The Strange Boys headline a retro revival that includes souped-up rawk from Those Peabodys and swaggering Southern steez from Scorpion Child. Around 1 a.m., DJs from Austin, London, and Glasgow (and special guests like Yo Majesty’s Shunda K.) kick off a late-night dance party that will ensure you never make it to any of those Wednesday panels. They sounded boring anyway. Also playing: Golden Bear, AM Syndicate, {{{Sunset}}}, Murdocks, Sleeping In The Aviary, Future Clouds And Radar.
