LIPS is by far their heaviest and funkiest recording yet, making more apparent their rock-n-roll influences, most notably, the HEAVY INFLUENCE OF Black Sabbath, while also revealing a nasty new funk. All along the evolution of the band, they have enjoyed and at times dreaded having an utter sense of freedom to take the band any direction they choose. Afterall, given the odd make-up of the band, there is no precedent to offer guidance, yet that can be a beautiful thing. For having experimented with an array of influences and ideas, taking the band one direction, then another, they have managed to boil it down to a sound that is singular in its blunt lyrics, funky rhythms, and evil riffs. While there may be disputes, CCB stays true to their origins on the new record, with no compromise in the instrumental make-up of the band (i.e. NO BASS). Despite the blaringly obvious influences (i.e. RL Burnside, Hounddog Taylor, etc) shown on previous records, CCB has never claimed to be a "blues" band, or even "punk blues" band for that matter and LIPS will most certainly confirm that conviction. LIPS should at the least bring listeners closer to an idea of what in the Fuck to make of Chili Cold Blood...at this juncture. But really, To hell with this analytic pondering, goddamnit, It's rock-n-roll.
