    Danny Brown: "Monopoly"

With "I'm on One" standing as 2011's preeminent summer jam, it's clear rappers are getting more fucked up than ever. But in the midst of the morbid reflection, hangovers, and mirthless clubbing, who's willing to revive the heyday of Eminem or Redman, guys as addicted to punchlines as narcotics who rapped about indefensible hedonism with the irresistible and almost innocent charm of that kid your parents warned you about? Certainly not today's Eminem or Redman. I'm not saying hip-hop owes it to us to make epic drug abuse sound fun again, but it's something of a relief that Danny Brown and his haircut let us know, off the bat, that he's honoring his Detroit roots by clearly not giving a fuck. His new mixtape XXX is commendable enough in its aspirations to be the most morally irresponsible work of the year, but "Monopoly" makes the best argument that for all his WTF? style, you can sleep on his skills at your own risk. It drops the same sort of budget Hot 97 banger we heard on "You Ain't Got Nuthin", the incongruous showcase of battle rap quotables on the otherwise throne-ascendant Tha Carter III . Fittingly, Brown just goes off in his strangulated, nasal honk about your shitty mixtapes and his awesomeness, delivered in language that's 95% NSFW. (His voice is certainly an acquired taste, most of the time sounding like Pharaohe Monch if he said "fuck it" and went all-out horrorcore.) Your reward for getting to the end? Having Cool Ranch Doritos ruined forever. Highly recommended to play around authority figures, in other words. Danny Brown: Monopoly [from XXX , out now on Fool's Gold ]

When Detroit-bred rapper Danny Brown dropped his free mixtape XXX last week, folks were understandably amped for the tape. Since releasing his stellar album The Hybrid last year and later signing to a hipster favorite record label, Brooklyn-based Fool’s Gold, Brown’s profile has risen considerably. Still, some questioned whether Brown had fallen off given his newfound proclivity for skinny jeans and a choice hairstyle decision (which he addresses on “Blunt After Blunt,” “complain about my jeans, because I’m takin’ all they hoooes”). Never mind that though, XXX is a more here

Directed by ASAP Rocky and the ICU, this video is a smoke-drenched, claustrophobic take on Danny Brown’s “Blunt After Blunt” track. The song itself is indulgent and boastful, but ultimately an admission of aimlessness punctuated by the visual of Brown coach-surfing and smoking. Chants of “STYLE” pierce the smoke, as does an ASAP cameo. Really though, all incentive one needs to check this out is the screenshot whereby one can spot Brown rocking a hooded tiger blazer. Not Tigers, tiger (double-breasted?). more here

If rain and gloom didn't take over Los Angeles this weekend, Danny Brown's "Grown Up" would have reached my stereo in perfect time. The track shines with pure, summer vibes, immediately bringing to mind BBQs, beach cruisers, pool parties, and all that good stuff. The "Walk On The Wild Side" reminiscent sample rings with old school playfulness and forces a humorously nostalgic tale from the usually deranged Brown. If you know his life story, the tested artist has reason to finally be happy. Therefore, once he pulls out, "Remember all for dinner all we ate was Captain Crunch, Now we more here
