Golden Apples

Since early 2000, the Golden Apples, have been delivering their very own kind of hooks. The sound owes much to the fact that this four-piece came together out of past, entrenched bands like The Texas Instruments, Tyrant Swing, Shindigs, and Jet Jaguar. This rebirth and newfound chemistry is signaled in the Golden Apples' songs: sharp and melodic, but with enough guitar shrapnel to rival the crunch and pure power of their musical forebears, they've seemingly hit upon a sophisticated sound and aesthetic that's less attitude than allegiance to texture, craft, and devotion to nailing the essence of the songs. With mod/power pop stylistic touchstones like the Small Faces, Big Star, the Move, early Who, 20/20, and even the Zombies, the band's clean crisp guitar figures, churning rhythm section, and especially effective use of harmonies on the chorus mark the Apples as among Austin's frontline in a new pop underground renaissance. - Luke Torn, Pop Culture Press
