Called Austin’s buzziest band so many times the backlash is due any minute now, garage-punk trio White Denim continues to rack up the accolades, recently earning album-of-the-year honors in UK mag Artrocker (even though its “debut” still isn’t officially out yet). See them now so you can say they sold out later. One of Austin’s other many next big things, Black Before Red has the smooth-rock airs of Phoenix, yet escapes the elevator with bells, whistles, handclaps, and a seductive joie de vivre. Its 2006 debut, Belgrave To Kings Circle, was the perfect summer album for pasty-faced shut-ins, but its intended audience should more readily embrace the group’s breezy indie-rock now that cardigan weather is in full swing. Opener Haunting Oboe Music pours just about everything but its titular instrument into the mix, creating moody music too cinematic to be dismissed as “emo” (yet too melodramatic not to whisper it as an aside). Opening: The Fever Dreams.

Beaumont, Texas, isn’t exactly a bustling metropolis—its biggest claims to fame include
giant oil derricks and getting hammered by hurricanes every few years—which probably
explains why so many talented young bands have formed there. Three of the acts headlining
Friday’s bill used to call Beaumont home: Ringo Deathstarr,Brit-pop acolytes whose
stuttering, swirling layers of guitars and anesthetized vocals should be catnip to anyone
familiar with the name Alan McGee; Haunting Oboe Music, a moody six-piece full of noirish
intrigue and outsized melodrama, like a Tennessee Williams play directed by David Lynch; and
La Snacks, flying the flag of the ‘90s revival with a sound as fuzzy and oddly stretched out
as a thrift-store sweater. Relative newcomer The Fever Dreams opens with its strange stew of
intricate math-rock runs and spaced-out jams.

via Austin Sound:
“What better band to get us ready for Halloween than Haunting Oboe Music. We’re not sure exactly how the oboe fits into the picture, but we’ll certainly give them haunting. A song like “Hawkins” (on their Myspace) with its alternating whispers and screams can get downright nightmarish as it contorts a mellow Explosions in the Sky vibe into schizo-emo frequencies. But the group is at their best when their exploding heavy At the Drive In guitars with some synth-grooves and blaring horns thrown in for an added cacophony.”

Haunting Oboe Music has no oboe, of course, but much to the consternation of anyone trying to pin it down, the Austin six-piece has just about everything else in its strangely expressive electro-emo stew. What it lacks in cohesiveness, HOM makes up for in mood, creating outsized melodrama that seems to come from a genuinely haunting place. The blissfully slacked-out La Snacks would have found good company in the mid-’90s sandwiched on a Pavement/Archers of Loaf bill, but even Pavement rarely wrote songs as simultaneously snarky and reverent as “Emo Kind of Love.” Electronic duo Transmography opens with synth-driven songs that are experimental, occasionally instrumental, and often just plain mental.

The ritual for disenbowlment is to be performed calmly and without flinching. If condemned to death for failure in music, it is held to be a privilege to execute the sentence on one’s own body rather than to be a disgrace and die at the hands of other bands with lesser talent. more at www.austin360.com
