*Female Powerpop Artist from Timmins, Ontario, Canada: Valerie Poxleitner a.k.a. LIGHTS is a female artist from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She composes and sings electronic indie-pop songs. She has released a self-titled EP and is currently working on her first full-length album. Website: iamlights.com Myspace: LightsNoise *Lights from Brooklyn: A psychedelic pop rock combo who in 2008 released their debut album (produced by Greg Weeks of Espers) on Weeks’ Language of Stone label in America the Twisted Nerve label in Britain. Lights were originally a duo formed by Brooklynites Sopphia Knapp and Linnea Vedder Shultswith with Meadows bassist Adam Mitchell, completing the band’s essential line-up. They make music that manages to be both ethereal and heavy at the same time. *North London based indie band, Lights: The band formed at the start of 2007 when the songwriting partnership of Courtenay Purcell (piano) and Andrew James (vocals) met two students, Dan Lea (bass) and Ben Walker (guitar), roping in the prodigious talents of Dom Clare on drums. With a blend of influences ranging from modern alternative music through to jazz and classical, and aided by a wealth of ideas for all sides of the band, Lights quickly engaged upon an intensive rehearsal regime which has seen the band write some 30 songs in six months. When their first gig in May at Proud Galleries netted them an exceptional live review in The Fly magazine, Lights quickly garnered an industry profile, and the summer has seen them record their debut EP which captures both their intensity, energy and most of all their wondrous melody and songwriting ability. The record was mixed by Richard Rainey (U2, The Aliens) during the last week of September. Despite the obvious musicality of Lights, who feature both a classically trained pianist and guitarist, their music is often a lesson in simplicity. Direct and beautiful melodies backed up by brilliant arrangements that contrast lush soundscapes with heart-breaking dynamic drops and key changes. All five members equally contribute to the songwriting process, with the resultant sound being a true digestion of their backgrounds, rather than simply being yet another bunch of imitators. The band are currently working on new material, to be road-tested with some acoustic sets during July, followed by extensive gigging in August/September in support of the album release. They can be found online at lights.mu. *Lights from Massachusetts: Lights was also a great indie rock band from Massachusetts. The released a self titled ep and an album called get lit.I would say They were a major influence in the small indie scene in the sub-urbs of mass. They had a very unique style blending elements of surf rock sporadic riffs and blasts of distortion. There done playing live and are currently doing a recording of every song they’ve ever played.
