Mp3Hugger.com Loxsly - Stethoscope Can there be anything more exciting than discovering an unsigned gem amongst the plethora of musical resources spread throughout myspace? Probably a few I suppose but right at this moment Austin 5-piece Loxsly are consuming me. Not in an agonising Ebola like way, more in a fuzzy first date type of one. Stethoscope could be the most affable piece of awkward pop Ive heard this year. It mixes equal parts Mercury Rev and Grandaddy to stir up a cocktail that shoots the summer breeze. There is scattiness in abundance by way of a flailing organ yet when the chips are down Stethoscope goes supernova on a trip fantastic chorus. Cody Ground provides the clean vocals while his cohorts manage to concoct a swirling mass of sweet audio distractions. Loxsly have an album out called Maps And Organs (recorded in all of 4 days) and with gems strewn about the place like Card Gauge its surely only a matter before Loxsly become Lords of the Manor. Hey, whats that noise; well, its the sound of your heart skipping a delighted beat. KD

Bridging dissonance and joy, Chris Simpson’s conglomerate Zookeeper mingles with Austin sixpiece/Belle City Pop! labelmates Sad Accordions. Simpson (Gloria Record, Mineral) demolished the walls of songwriting on Zookeeper’s 2007 debut LP, Becoming All Things, and Sad Accordions’ Slint-meets-Wilco slow burn translates into A Bad Year for the Sharons. Locals Loxsly, Bill Baird’s Sunset, Frank Smith, and Wine & Revolution join in on the summer fun. – Darcie Stevensmore at austinchronicle.com

Though the Springfield, Mo., quartet has begun to outgrow its quirky name, SSLYBY capitalized on dubious nostalgia for the former Russian leader and sunk smooth pop hooks into Polyvinyl for sophomore effort Pershing. Oakland quintet Port O’Brien rides a nautical wave of folk-pop on upcoming official debut LP All We Could Do Was Sing. Locals Loxsly shine Flashlights.

Austin’s What Made Milwaukee Famous began its journey to fame in 2006 when it signed with Barsuk Records (original home of Death Cab For Cutie), which re-released the band’s debut, Trying To Never Catch Up. Fortunately, the hometown boys make good on that promise on the brand-new What Doesn’t Kill Us, adding appropriately sized stadium bravado to its already shimmering indie-pop gems, and crafting a record that may finally garner it the sort of media fawning, soundtrack work, and ringtone money afforded to Barsuk’s most celebrated product. WMMF plays a CD-release show here aided by sets from three Austin bands due for their own breakouts: ice-water dance-rock from The Lemurs, countrified synth-pop from Loxsly, and dreamy harmonies from Black Before Red.

Text this event As former members of popular/seminal bands know, the glory days of yesteryear can become tomorrow’s millstone. It’s a phenomenon Davey von Bohlen and Dan Didier of Maritime know well, having played in beloved indie (sigh,”emo”) group The Promise Ring.Maritime’s 2004 debut Glass Floor lurked in the same quiet room as The Promise Ring’s swan song, Wood/Water, but last year’s We, The Vehicles showed Maritime growing more confident—and intriguing—as an indie-pop
outfit. That group’s new Heresy And The Hotel Choir—loaded with characteristically melodic, sadly brooding songs—shows Maritime is no longer Wings to Promise Ring’s Beatles. The One AM Radio (the nom derock of L.A. songwriter Hrishikesh Hirway) mines the same aloof, prep-school folk as early Belle & Sebastian, delicate and bordering on pretentious without completely succumbing to its own trappings.Opening: Loxsly.

Nothing says “Austin indie rock” quite like the combination of synthesizers and pedal steel, and the swirly art-poppers in Loxsly make good use of both. The psychedelic five-piece also knows the importance of a light show when trying to provoke head-trips, but never lets its accessories weigh down the boisterous, buoyant pop at its core. A recently finished album of new material needs only the ballast of a record deal before blasting the band further into the stratosphere. Catch Loxsly here with the only-occasionally quiet Quiet Lovely, hushed indie-folk group Sad Accordions, and Waco power-pop trio Yay For Squares. www.theonion.com
