Power-pop is a bit like porn: slippery to define. For two days, Austin becomes the center of the power-pop universe as the Wild Weekend Power Pop Festival serves up punchy testimonials to the enduring appeal of its namesake genre. The first recognized use of the term came in 1967 when Pete Townshend used it to describe the Who, but Friday’s headliner, Paul Collins, didn’t know this in 1974 when he formed the Nerves with Jack Lee and future Plimsoul Peter Case.

Judging by the title of its new album, Pardon Me, Are Those Your Claws On My Back?, local garage howlers Faceless Werewolves haven’t lost their sense of humor—or any of their seductive charm. While the glossy production and cooing female harmonies of leaked single “Couldn’t Believe It Blues” may have you half-convinced this wolf is nothing more than a yipping puppy, pretty soon those much-ballyhooed claws come out, and the trio is scratching its way out of the speakers in a frenzy of feedback, blipping wah-wah solos, and angry caterwauls aimed at dirty boys who done ’em wrong. Opening: Dazzling King Solomon, Ripe, DJ Angel Von Ripper. (Faceless Werewolves also play an in-store at Waterloo Records on March 7 at 5pm.)
