Portugal. The Man
Hometown: Wasilla, Alaska/Portland, Oregon
Tags: indie, experimental, indie rock
Perhaps growing up in Wasilla, Ak., warps your geographical sense. Maybe it puts you a little too close to magnetic North (or ex-Mayor Sarah Palin). That’s about as good an explanation as any for Portugal. The Man’s moniker, though lead singer and guitarist John Gourley has also attributed its rather convoluted inspiration to David Bowie. The now Portland-based foursome of indie-experimental-art rockers tends to be a little off-the-compass in other ways, too; witness the band’s above-average attraction for punctuation: Its 2006 debut album was titled Waiter: “You Vulture!” Portugal. The Man’s latest, released this year, is The Satanic Satanist. Following the release of 2008’s Censored Colors, Alternative Press named Gourley Best Vocalist of the Year.
