Bridging dissonance and joy, Chris Simpson’s conglomerate Zookeeper mingles with Austin sixpiece/Belle City Pop! labelmates Sad Accordions. Simpson (Gloria Record, Mineral) demolished the walls of songwriting on Zookeeper’s 2007 debut LP, Becoming All Things, and Sad Accordions’ Slint-meets-Wilco slow burn translates into A Bad Year for the Sharons. Locals Loxsly, Bill Baird’s Sunset, Frank Smith, and Wine & Revolution join in on the summer fun. – Darcie Stevensmore at austinchronicle.com

A tall, lanky solo artist who’s been compared to other tall, lanky solo artists like Jens Lekman and Jonathan Richman, Jeremy Jay traffics in sparse, moony-eyed pop that takes its stylistic cues from 1950s rock ’n’ roll and lovelorn French chansons. While the unabashed romanticism and reverb-driven surf guitar lines could be dismissed as retro fad, there’s an eerie, refracted quality to Jay’s music that haunts the listener long after his debut LP, A Place Where We Could Go, stops spinning. The singer conjures up images of ghostly proms and long-gone teen angels with a detached croon that’s both intimate and too ephemeral to touch. There’s a hint of humor in there as well: Check his cover of Suicide’s “Ghost Rider” for proof. Opening: {{{Sunset}}}, Nic Armstrong.

The 30th anniversary of Pecan Street keeps it weird with five stages and 20 locals. Saturday beams with Bill Baird’s Sunset, the Lemurs, Ume, Attack Formation, Daniel Francis Doyle, and more before setting off fireworks (literally) with Grupo Fantasma at 8pm. Sunday sets an ethnic vibe with a Latin stage, St. Edward’s Ballet Folklorico, and Sabaya Belly Dancers, plus a country stage for good measure (the Moonhangers, Texas Sapphires, et al.). Priming the pump for a week’s worth of debauchery, Beauty Bar gets the buzz started for early SXSW arrivals with a crash course on some of the best bands Austin has to offer. On the outside stage, Belaire lets the sun shine in with infectious indie-tronica and huggable harmonies from last year’s Exploding, Impacting along with desert-folk troubadours Brothers And Sisters and funky art-school aces The Black And White Years. Inside, garage wunderkinds The Strange Boys headline a retro revival that includes souped-up rawk from Those Peabodys and swaggering Southern steez from Scorpion Child. Around 1 a.m., DJs from Austin, London, and Glasgow (and special guests like Yo Majesty’s Shunda K.) kick off a late-night dance party that will ensure you never make it to any of those Wednesday panels. They sounded boring anyway. Also playing: Golden Bear, AM Syndicate, {{{Sunset}}}, Murdocks, Sleeping In The Aviary, Future Clouds And Radar.

UT’s student transistors at KVRX usher in the new semester with a local lineup as eclectic as their free-form frequency. This year’s curriculum is fully loaded, offering Sunset’s expansive indie textures, Low Red Center’s electro-twitch, T-Bird & the Breaks’ soul shakedown, Transmography’s percussive assault, Ringo Deathstarr’s psychedelics, and Phranchyze’s freestyle flow. Score an A+ for music appreciation. – Doug Freeman
