The Applicators

HOMETOWN:
Texas
MYSPACE:
myspace.com/theapplicators

Pop Punk / Rock / Punk While attending high school, the ladies who make up the punk-pop sound of THE APPLICATORS weren't exactly concerned with going to the prom or dating the star quarterback. Instead, THE APPLICATORS played instruments and worshiped the likes of the Cramps, Motörhead, the Breeders, and the Jam. Each had saved every penny to buy her own equipment, but it wasn't until early 1999 that the fearsome foursome would connect and form THE APPLICATORS in their native Austin, TX. Over the next few years, THE APPLICATORS honed a wicked pop sound, sharing dates with the Teen Idols, Fear, and their heroes, Bad Religion. Bad Religion/Circle Jerks guitarist Greg Hetson caught one of these shows and liked the band's raw appeal. He went on to produce THE APPLICATORS' debut album, What's Your Excuse. Fast Forward to 2006 and get hooked on THE APPLICATORS latest batch of snarling pop narcotic. Going for the throat of rock n roll and keeping alive the spirit of EIY Earn It Yourself, THE APPLICATORS release their sophomore effort My Weapon. My Weapon continues the tightrope walk between sex appeal, fun, chaos and infectious beats. Emo’s notorious Free Week continues with every type of rock & roll known to Austin. Friday, the Lounge tests chaos theory with punks Hex Dispensers, the Ape-Shits, the Teeners, and Scrabble Robot. Outside introduces the rawk of Lions to the SoCal sunshine of Brothers & Sisters, and inside gets vintage rock/garage/gritty R&B respectively with Those Peabodys, the Ugly Beats, and Black Joe Lewis. Saturday, Cruiserweight pop-punks inside with the Applicators, Car Stereo (Wars) throw a dance party with Mothfight and friends in the Lounge, and the Strange Boys throw down with the Crack Pipes (featuring the return of guitarist Billy Steve), Zykos, and Brazos outside.read more at AustinChronicle.com

Punk-rock kittens whose crunchy pop songs would sound equally at home on a beer-soaked stage or the “getting dumped” montage in an Amanda Bynes flick, Austin’s The Applicators were once pegged to follow The Donnas into superstardom. Unfortunately, the national appetite for female-fronted pop-punk seems to have swung irrevocably toward poseurs like Avril Lavigne, which means The Applicators – who can namedrop The Cramps without sounding like total idiots – are missing out on all the babysitting money. Still, maybe America’s loss is Austin’s gain, as (at least for now) we’re allowed to enjoy the sassy spunk of the band’s recent My Weapon without enduring the squeals of braces-wearing 14-year-olds. Opening band The Dollyrots survived the embarrassment of getting discovered in a very un-punk Hewlett-Packard commercial to put out a decent first record, the ‘60s girl-group-flavored Eat My Heart Out. The band hasn’t put its days of corporate shilling behind it, though: The title track from this year’s follow-up Because I’m Awesome was recently featured in a Kohl’s commercial. Also playing: The Sweethearts, Amanda Lepre, Heart And Soul Sound System. www.theonion.com
