There are at least two groups performing under the name, The Brunettes. 1. The Brunettes are an indie pop or twee pop group from New Zealand formed in 1998. The band consists of core members Jonathan Bree and Heather Mansfield but they bring in friends for recording and touring. The band self released its first recording, the Mars Loves Venus EP, in 1998. The band are signed to Auckland based label Lil’ Chief Records which was founded by Jonathan Bree and Scott Mannion in 2001. The Brunettes’ first album Holding Hands, Feeding Ducks, released in 2002, was the debut release for the label. This was followed 6 months later by the mini-album "The Boyracer EP". Their second album, Mars Loves Venus, was released in June 2004 again on Lil’ Chief and was quickly followed by 2005’s EP "When Ice met cream". More recently the band has been signed to the American Sub Pop Label possibly as a result of their opening for The Shins 2005 tour of North America. They have also opened for Rilo Kiley, The Postal Service and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. On their official website, they claim to simultaneously deny and invite the terms, "Coy, cute, cutie-pie, hoochie-pie, coochie-woo, woochie-candy-poo." 2. An American all female guitar duo, who are, in fact, both brunettes. Listen at Last.fm

Featured Review from TheOnion
September 10, 2009Seattle’s Scott Reitherman began releasing home-pressed discs of droney, lo-fi indie rock in 2004, but it wasn’t until he pieced together an album’s worth of his Neutral Milk Hotel-meets-Eric’s Trip songs that Throw Me The Statue became a common exclamation outside of the Indiana Jones oeuvre. more at austin.decider.com

tinymixtapes on The Brunettes
over 4 years agoThe Brunettes showcase the kind of ornate progression of the genre they’ve been toying with since 1998. It’s about maintaining a pop mentality while subverting dire simplicity with studio invention. Stepping on a landmine of pop innovations, the explosion disperses in the forms of fuzz-infused post-rock and 1960s diner nostalgia. more at tinymixtapes.com
