Merrick Brown has been called many things in his life but boring is not one of them. By day he is a self-taught graphic designer and by night, a bit of a music aficionado. Eleven years ago, a young Merrick Brown came across techno and jungle, and was instantly hooked on its frenetic beats. Soon after moving to Austin in 1996, he began collecting gear and making beats, eventually creating Tektite Recordings and Chalant Music. Both labels have featured an impressive roster of Texas and international artists. Chalant was also behind a series of legendary club events, featuring such acts as Jazzanova, King Britt, Charles Webster, DJ Heather, Mark Farina, and many more. They exposed Austin to some fresh sounds and gave Merrick the opportunity to further refine his DJ chops. Merrick has played an integral role in the Texas electronic music scene, staying on the cutting edge while remaining rooted in music of the past. He is known for DJ sets that are energetic and spontaneous, with a freeform style guided by constant crowd interaction. His excitement for music comes across when he plays along with a sense of humor that frequently wins over even the most challenging audiences. These days you'll find Merrick Brown every Thursday at Get Broke! (Plush, Austin), where he has been creating musical masterpieces out of chaos for almost 4 years. Where else can you hear broken beats, techno, dubstep, booty and electro alongside deep house, jazz, disco, funk and soul? Get Broke is more than a club night, it's a way of life!
