Washed Out

Within and Without is the debut album by 28 year-old Atlanta-based songwriter and producer Ernest Greene, AKA Washed Out. Long adored and critically lauded in the blog world, Greene first came to prominence in the summer of 2009 after unassumingly posting a handful of bedroom-recorded tracks to his Myspace page from his family home in the seclusion of the tiny rural city of Perry, Georgia. “I’d been writing music on my own for three or four years previous to that,” Greene explains, “mostly as a way to experiment with songwriting processes. Those were just the first I ever shared.”

Despite such modest intentions however, those first songs (many of which would appear on the acclaimed Life of Leisure EP of later that year) were about as complete an opening statement from an artist as imaginable. A heady, psychedelic concoction of what Pitchfork’s Mark Hogan termed “romantic nostalgia and homespun textures,” songs such as “Belong” and “Feel It All Around”—Greene’s biggest hit to date—artfully match the glossy melody of ’80s synth pop, the widescreen scope of early ’90s Balearic dance music and the slowed, heavy bounce of southern Hip Hop production to gorgeously wistful vocals with results as undeniably idiosyncratic and original as they are deeply accessible.

Washed Out Within And Without [Sub Pop]

Washed Out’s Ernest Greene has been teasing us since 2009, dropping tasty EP’s here and there. After signing with Sub Pop, we are finally treated to his first LP, co-produced by Ben Allen, producer of such acts as Deerhunter, Matt & Kim and Lenka to name a few. With nine tracks, it’s a fairly short album, but I don’t think anyone will mind since it contains such quality cuts.

Moby-esque opener “Eyes Be Closed”, gets us into the right vibe for the rest of the album. “Echoes” with its almost continual digi-drum and snare beats got my head bobbin’. “Soft” brought back all the good feelings from Washed Out’s own “Feel It All Around” back into the forefront of where feel-good music resides in my lobes. “You and I” is slow-burn beats and lo-fi goodness, while the ballad “A Dedication” puts Greene’s vocals front and center.

Listening to Within And Without feels a bit like déjà vu sometimes due to Greene’s penchant for sampling. He does so masterfully, putting his own Washed Out twist to each track. Washed Out delivers a delicious album full of lo-fi, chillwave cuts full of good vibes. Put the record on, mix yourself a nice icy cold drink, and lounge by the pool. Summer is upon us.

“Eyes Be Closed” is the first preview into Washed Out’s upcoming (and first Sub Pop) album Within or Without . The track is a definite stand out against the chill-wave scene that Washed Out grew in to, and is a sure sign of some impressive growth. To me, the track’s sweeping synths and chord progression are reminiscent of Moby, giving the song an almost dated feel. But dated to a time in my life when things were all a bit easier, so I don’t necessarily mind revisiting those years… Washed Out - "Eyes Be Closed" more here

Photo Credit: One Thirty BPM All it took was one scalper, offering one ticket, outside of the Echoplex on Friday to nearly incite a riot from the lines of fans hoping to have a night with Atlanta’s synth-phenom, Washed Out . Curse words were shouted, girl friends offered to leave their boy friends, and bids were put in for nearly $100, and hey- isn’t this supposed to be the leader of the chill wave movement? It was that exact question that could have been asked more here
