Though the Springfield, Mo., quartet has begun to outgrow its quirky name, SSLYBY capitalized on dubious nostalgia for the former Russian leader and sunk smooth pop hooks into Polyvinyl for sophomore effort Pershing. Oakland quintet Port O’Brien rides a nautical wave of folk-pop on upcoming official debut LP All We Could Do Was Sing. Locals Loxsly shine Flashlights.

Eric Tessmer Band w/ Zapata
Wed. 05/07 | 7:00PM @ Antone's (Downtown)

Local blues rock group the Eric Tessmer Band plays tonight at Antones. These three 20-somethings are led by Tessmer, who grew up in Wisconsin in a family of guitarists. They might remind some of the days when you could strut down to Sixth Street and hear Stevie Ray Vaughan jamming. Tessmer appeals to multiple generations, from college students all the way to old-time bartenders. Opening for Tessmer is Zapata, a great band with dueling drummers, one of whom is Gary Clark Jr., often touted as Austin’s newest guitar hero. It’s going to be a blues night to remember. — Blair Shiff more at austin360.com

Priming the pump for a week’s worth of debauchery, Beauty Bar gets the buzz started for early SXSW arrivals with a crash course on some of the best bands Austin has to offer. On the outside stage, Belaire lets the sun shine in with infectious indie-tronica and huggable harmonies from last year’s Exploding, Impacting along with desert-folk troubadours Brothers And Sisters and funky art-school aces The Black And White Years. Inside, garage wunderkinds The Strange Boys headline a retro revival that includes souped-up rawk from Those Peabodys and swaggering Southern steez from Scorpion Child. Around 1 a.m., DJs from Austin, London, and Glasgow (and special guests like Yo Majesty’s Shunda K.) kick off a late-night dance party that will ensure you never make it to any of those Wednesday panels. They sounded boring anyway. Also playing: Golden Bear, AM Syndicate, {{{Sunset}}}, Murdocks, Sleeping In The Aviary, Future Clouds And Radar.
