Called Austin’s buzziest band so many times the backlash is due any minute now, garage-punk trio White Denim continues to rack up the accolades, recently earning album-of-the-year honors in UK mag Artrocker (even though its “debut” still isn’t officially out yet). See them now so you can say they sold out later. One of Austin’s other many next big things, Black Before Red has the smooth-rock airs of Phoenix, yet escapes the elevator with bells, whistles, handclaps, and a seductive joie de vivre. Its 2006 debut, Belgrave To Kings Circle, was the perfect summer album for pasty-faced shut-ins, but its intended audience should more readily embrace the group’s breezy indie-rock now that cardigan weather is in full swing. Opener Haunting Oboe Music pours just about everything but its titular instrument into the mix, creating moody music too cinematic to be dismissed as “emo” (yet too melodramatic not to whisper it as an aside). Opening: The Fever Dreams.

You’d be forgiven for thinking that a band with the name …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead and a well-documented history of destroying its instruments onstage would be genuinely scary. In fact, Austinites know firsthand that things used to be a lot more aggressive in the TOD camp, but the band’s approach was so tempered on last year’s So Divided that even the Polyphonic Spree-sounding “Eight Days Of Hell” and a gentle cover of Guided By Voices’ “The Goldheart Mountaintop Queen Directory” didn’t sound out of place. With the recent promising news that the band has finally freed itself from Interscope—or “prison,” as their press release calls it—Trail Of Dead seems to be intent on recapturing its brutal youth, starting with a fall tour supporting Dethklok, the fictional death-metal band of Adult Swim’s Metalocalypse, to be followed by recording sessions for its sixth album, hopefully with all pop pretensions forgotten. Opening: Black Joe Lewis And The Honey Bears, Migas.

via Austin Sound:
“What better band to get us ready for Halloween than Haunting Oboe Music. We’re not sure exactly how the oboe fits into the picture, but we’ll certainly give them haunting. A song like “Hawkins” (on their Myspace) with its alternating whispers and screams can get downright nightmarish as it contorts a mellow Explosions in the Sky vibe into schizo-emo frequencies. But the group is at their best when their exploding heavy At the Drive In guitars with some synth-grooves and blaring horns thrown in for an added cacophony.”

You have to admire rock critics who aren’t afraid to climb onstage themselves. Luckily, Pitchfork Media scribe Matt LeMay—who notoriously gave Liz Phair’s eponymous 2003 record an almost unheard of “0.0” rating—is as exacting about his own songs as he is others’: Last year’s Geography Cones, the debut by LeMay’s Get Him Eat Him, is a bracing, quirky grafting of XTC and Les Savy Fav that seemed tailor-made for Pitchfork-ophiles. The disc’s solid popcraft ultimately pays off, even if the new sophomore effort, Arms Down, is a mostly unremarkable streamlining of its predecessor. Headliner The Wrens hit a career apex with 2003’s The Meadowlands, a sleeper classic that has set the stakes impossibly high for a follow-up. There’s no word of a new album, but a documentary about the band’s continuing efforts to produce it is in the works. Opening: Moonlight Towers. Very superstitious? The writing’s on the wall at this Friday The 13th celebration of black cats and broken mirrors, starring some of the scene’s darkest horses. The sinister, reverb-drenched Horse Plus Donkey slouches toward Bethlehem here alongside headliner Shapes Have Fangs’ wicked bite of post-Libertines guitar rock, while the creepy innocence of Night Viking and Count Dracula’s Weed Smuggling Engine will have you tossing salt over every shoulder. www.theonion.com
