SBTRKT

Tags: dj, electronica, electronic, dubstep, future garage

A self-taught producer, London’s SBTRKT — aka Aaron Jerome — mixes elements of dubstep, 2-step, garage, house, soul, and techno into a bass-heavy blend of flowing melodies and intricate percussion. The project’s name was intended to remove the identity of any one person from the music, and SBTRKT even performed with a mask on to preserve that concept. After years of honing his craft, in 2009 Jerome sent tracks to DJs including BBC Radio 1’s Graeme Sinden and Mary Anne Hobbs, who made singles such as “Nervous” into radio hits. SBTRKT’s remixes for MIA, Basement Jaxx, and Underworld, among others, also met with success, as did his self-released singles Timeless and Right Place. He also issued a pair of singles for the enigmatic Brainmath label, LAIKA and 2020, as well as the Break Off/Evening Glow single for Ramp Recordings, which featured Jerome’s frequent vocal collaborator Sampha. SBTRKT’s first gig was at the famed Fabric club; he also DJ’ed at the club Plastic People, where he met an A&R rep from the Young Turks label, who released the Soundboy Shift EP in 2010 and the Step in Shadows EP, and his self-titled debut album in 2011. One of its singles, “Wildfire,” featured Little Dragon vocalist Yukumi Nagano and caught the ear of rapper Drake. His remix of the song received airplay on New York’s WQHT and Miami’s WPOW.

    Why do so many electronic music acts lately like to hide behind masks and be silhouetted on stage with no direct spotlights? On Sunday, October 14, at Club Nokia, I saw behind SBTRKT’s signature African-style mask and he’s a perfectly attractive bloke-and a talented, innovative DJ/producer/drummer to boot. Why hide? I suppose that by taking appearance out of the equation, then the music is the centerpiece as it should be. SBTRKT and accompanying vocalist Sampha held the attention of the audience fully as they performed as darkened figures, in front of a giant backdrop lit with blue hues more here

    James Blake helped reel in 2011 as the year of post-dubstep, but it would have only gone so far if it were not for the heavier, dreamier sound of SBTRKT. With an amazing cast of guest vocalist that includes Little Dragon, the producer and beat maker created one 20112s most unique sounding records in an increasingly tiresome genre ( as Blake himself pointed out ). His shadowy, self-titled debut is equally beautiful and gritty. Tonight, the Mondrian LA and IAMSOUND Records present SBTRKT in one of the best atmospheres imaginable. The masked man SBTRKT made a moon-lit appearance at the pool of the Mondrian Hotel in LA this past Monday. Lucky attendees were awed by the deep beats that seemed to glide across the water and off into the city skyline. Our always lovely photographer Paley Fairman was on the scene to capture the unforgettable night. Radiohead - "Lotus Flower" (SBTRKT Remix) more at elbo.ws

    Nothing needs to be added to Sbtrkt’s game in the music industry. His track Wildfire, ft. Little Dragon has become an instant hit, and his debut studio album is front to back enjoyable. Smooth beats, accompanied by an array of different vocalists, give Sbtrkt the tools needed to grow successful. Did I mention he plays the drums during some of his songs to accompany his premixed beats? He is truly a talent in the making, even if he wears odd tribal hide his identity. With the response he received at North Coast Music Festival, this Bottom Lounge show will surely be an event to look forward to on November 4th. -Derek Bogseth {PLC Writer}
