Loquat

Hometown: San Francisco

The members of Loquat, San Francisco’s answer to Swedish pop music, have plenty of memories to work from. Between the weddings and funerals, Loquat has committed to gorgeous, sincere songs filled with nostalgia and emotion. The introspective lyrics of Kylee Swenson are matched by her haunting vocals floating over the minimal moods of her bandmates. Loquat have made a name for themselves throughout the Bay Area and beyond for their addictive brand of guitar pop. With a few EPs and an LP under their collective belts, Loquat explores life’s mysteries with deft grace and eloquent composure. Their upcoming full length, Secrets of the Sea, finds the group in transition from Smith’s-esque melancholy to a more comfortable, yet no less sublime, space and time. Alternately Cardigans, Stereolab, and hints of ABBA and Cat Power, Swenson and company relieve the stress of overproduced, overhyped acts with a steady hand and endearing voice. Listen at Last.fm
“Lots of bands mix electronic and acoustic instruments, but few pull it off with the grace—or even the shimmering melodies—exhibited by this San Francisco group fronted by Kylee Swenson.” —San Francisco Chronicle

Artist: Loquat Album: It’s Yours to Keep Label: Jackpine Social Club Records Genre: Rock/Pop Rating: Buy it >>

Loquat lead singer Kylee Swenson could read the periodic table and make it sound like pillow talk. Equally desperate and dreamy, Swenson’s silky sweet nothings are the perfect complement to Loquat’s quirky ambiance.

Yes there will always be those comparisons to the Cardigans or Sneaker Pimps, but on songs like, “Slow, Fast, Wait & See,” and “Need Air,” Loquat shows unequalled depth…true future-retro. Close your eyes and let It’s Yours to Keep launch you into space for a meteor milkshake.

Artist: Loquat Album: Secrets of the Sea Label: Talking House Rating: Buy it >>

The second full album from the Bay Area ambient rock band, Loquat, is a welcomed surprise. The tracks are refreshing and relaxing with the female vocal performance being haunting. The music and lyrics can only be described as “poetic.”

A well thought album, with many songs that deserve to be big hits: “Shaky Like The Flum” “In My Sleep,” “Go Hibernate,” “Sit Sideways,” and “Harder Hit.” Unfortunately, none of the songs have the perfection of their 2003 released Swingset Chain. However, their older album didn’t have as many good songs. So at the very least, this more mature album offers more for the buck.

This is one of the best albums this year, especially from a Bay Area band.

Loquat We Could Be Arsonists [Nacional Records]

Loquat‘s third full-length album We Could Be Arsonists is a gorgeous audio assault on the ears that you’ve got to hear to believe.

The album starts off with the track “Time Bending” that sounds like a Seedy Seeds B-side. The song lyrically talks about the vastness of the universe all while these sweet vocals echo over electronic synth lines. “Seeds” starts off like a simpler indie-pop track with an acoustic guitar, but when the lyrics kick in, the track is a bit of a dance-along that you cannot miss. “Rumbling” is a similar track feeling a bit like an energetic Cranberries song. Every song on this album will make you move around and wonder, “when was the last time an album made you think all while making gorgeous sounds?”

If you’re a fan of female vocals, a little bit of an electronic feeling, and a fun time, be sure to pick up We Could Be Arsonists.
