It wasn’t that long ago that Rilo Kiley—anchored by guitarists-vocalists Blake Sennett and Jenny Lewis—was the darling of the indie scene. The group’s name connoted an in-the-know cachet for those who could rattle off their favorite tracks from 2004’s More Adventurous. While the band’s fortunes haven’t completely reversed, last year’s Under The Blacklight—Rilo Kiley’s major-label debut—put them in decline. Greeted indifferently (or hostilely) by fans, it found the group expanding into Fleetwood Mac soft-rock territory. Still, Rilo Kiley was expanding its boundaries, and the album is a grower that seems destined to earn more respect over time. Al Jourgensen is disassembling the Ministry pulpit after more than a quarter-century, but the final tour is going out hellfire-and-brimstone-style. Ministry’s recent (but certainly not last) CD, Cover Up, unleashed trademark vocal menace and punishing beat on “Bang a Gong” and other flashback favorites, a good indicator of what you’ll hear between “N.W.O.” and “Just One Fix.” (Ah, for the days of “Stainless Steel Providers”!) Man Man impressed my pants off.

When talking about Mickey Avalon, it’s easy to concentrate on his wild background—which includes prostitution, heroin, and all sorts of other things that should make Phanatic Films’ documentary about his life worth watching—but his music is just as noteworthy. Based in L.A., Avalon’s electro-influenced hip-hop—dubbed “glam rap”—is the perfect soundtrack for the kind of partying that surrounds him, and he does an excellent job of bringing that energy to whatever stage he’s on. Last year’s self-titled debut sports plenty of great moments, but they’re all taken to the next level at his already legendary shows. Here, he’ll be joined by fellow Dyslexic Speedreaders Andre Legacy and Dirt Nasty (a.k.a. former MTV VJ Simon Rex), who will surely help out with “My Dick,” which contains such deep thoughts as “My dick / the size of a pumpkin / Your dick / look like Macaulay Culkin.” Also appearing: DJ Leggo.
