An insanely ambitious band that stages manic spectacles with relatively little means, Of Montreal has blossomed on the strength of shows that should embarrass most (if not all) other bands of their ilk. more at austin.decider.com

As he helmed the countless incarnations of Wooden Wand, James Jackson Toth traversed the outskirts of folk with experimental musings, but the Tennessee native saved his best for himself. Toth’s solo debut, Waiting in Vain (Rykodisc), delves soulfully into Southern balladry, unraveling the softer threads of Tom Petty, the Rolling Stones, and Robyn Hitchcock. Seattle duo the Dutchess & the Duke opens by burning through a spectrum of Sixties rock, pop, and folk. – Doug Freeman

Morrissey’s name probably isn’t high up on Andy Rourke’s Christmas card list: The former Smiths bassist joined forces with drummer Mike Joyce a decade ago to sue Morrissey and Johnny Marr for unpaid royalties. Needless to say, it was an acrimonious affair, but such trivia pales before the might and dexterity of Rourke’s bass playing, which was always unfairly overshadowed by Marr’s admittedly godlike virtuosity. Rourke has been caught up with various projects since The Smiths’ dissolution 20 years ago, and also keeps busy spinning records at clubs around the world, where he doubtlessly fends off aging groupies and inevitable questions about a Smiths reunion. Austin’s twitchy electro-rockers The Black And White Years should provide an excellent dance floor primer.

Even in the precious world of indie rock, it’s possible to be too cutesy, and Mates Of State have been toeing that line for most of their career. But the dewy duo continues to save itself by producing albums that are better than the previous ones, including the new Re-Arrange Us, which puts a few spins on the band’s drums-and-organ format via extra instrumentation from producers Peter Katis, Chris Walla, and Spoon’s Jim Eno. Its 10 catchy songs are so solid that you probably won’t even notice their creators making googly eyes at each other. Headlights hails from Illinois, though sonically—with its gauzy harmonies and swooping guitars—it could be the offspring of Britain’s early-’90s shoegazer movement and the chipper side of the Montreal scene. Also playing: Black Joe Lewis.

Still riding the buzz of 2006 debut The Loon, Minneapolis quartet Tapes ’n Tapes ups the ante with latest Walk It Off (XL), reeling in rambunctious indie rock with help from Mercury Rev’s Dave Fridmann. Local trio White Denim, hot off a European tour, returns with its freewheelin’ blend of neo-psychedelia and soulful garage pop. Grab a copy of the trio’s Fall Tour ’08 LP. – Austin Powell

Former Hüsker Dü drummer Grant Hart has been quiet on the recording front since 1999’s criminally underappreciated solo disc Good News For Modern Man, but unfortunately that’s the only place where he’s remained silent: Hart continues to put his foot in his mouth at every opportunity, most recently turning a comment on a still-gestating album with members of Godspeed You! Black Emperor into yet another slap at ex-partner Bob Mould (“They’ve given more of themselves in a few weeks than Bob did in nine years with Hüsker Dü,” he told a British magazine). Judgment will have to be reserved until said record is actually delivered, of course, but all embarrassing sour grapes aside, the emo forefather’s wall-of-sound pop-rock usually makes up in songcraft what it lacks in prolificacy—which is something that can’t always be said of his former collaborator. Opening: Grand Champeen, The Service Industry.
