A music line -up of world class funk-meisters and two nights chock-full of music, the 3rd Annual FunkFest promises to become a signature event in this music town. Set for November 21 & 22, 2008 at The Parish, 214 E. 6^th Street.

FunkFest III

The Stanton Moore (GALACTIC) Trio with Robert Walter (GREYBOY ALLSTARS) and Will Bernard will kick off the festival on Friday, November 21 with The Greyhounds and special guest Topaz opening the show. Friday night the doors are at 9:00 PM.

Saturday, November 22 the line up is not any less impressive with Bonerama from New Orleans, On The One from San Diego and Austin bands; Flyjack, T Bird & The Breaks and Uncle Bruno. Saturday night the doors are at 7:00 PM

FunkFest III promises all-star special guest performances sprinkled throughout the weekend.

In 2008 the Nebrasksa-based indie rock star Conor Oberst abandoned the Bright Eyes moniker he's been performing under since his teens, then rounded up a band headed down to Mexico. The result was his first solo album in 13 years, a self-titled release that stays true to the introspective brand of folk rock he's famous for. Like Oberst, The Felice Brothers have drawn comparisons to Bob Dylan and the Band. Rig 1 opens.

Reinvigorated southern rockers The Black Crowes are back on the map with a sharp new lineup, a new record label, and a new album entitled Warpaint. Paste Magazine called it "much-matured," blending bluesy, funkiﬁed riff-rockers, snaky grooves, revved-up gospel, and honey-sweet country-soul ballads. You can bet that their hit singles "Hard to Handle" and "She Talks to Angels" will still steal the show at the Austin Music Hall on Saturday night.

Austin by-way-of Ohio garage rock band the Heartless Bastards continue breaking themselves in to the Audtin music scene with a Saturday night performance at Stubb's indoor. Fronted by Erika Wennerstrom, who "rocks like Patti Smith fronting Crazy Horse or John Lee Hooker as a girl," the trio are known for their rootsy, soulful, straight-ahead garage rock. Their forthcoming album is described as a "killer record with bourbon-soaked grit that's hypnotic like hill-country blues."

You've heard her voice everywhere from the airwaves to your local Austin watering hole and upscale cocktail lounges. Her name is Katherine Edmonson (known on stage as Kat) and she is resurrecting old standards and jazz tunes with a distinctively energetic and hypnotic voice and putting a hip, new spin on a variety of pop tunes. Even the rowdiest of crowds are mesmerized by her self-authored heart-wrenching ballads and unique renditions of old familiars. While Kat's taste and talent for singing/performing began around age 4, her musical debut began at age 19 with American Idol, when they aired her audition at the onset of the second season. The verdict from the typically indifferent Simon was that not only was her sound equal to that of legendary Doris Day, but that her audition performance (Fever) was "100% totally authentic for the type of song she chose". After making her way to California, her performance was rated in the top 50 out of hundreds of thousands competitors. Continuing her career in Austin, Kat's vocal talents landed her a spot on the television show, Gimmie the Mike, an Austin competition held for rising pop and rock artists. There she also appeared on the show as one of the finalists in the competion singing "Crazy". During the Spring of 2005, Katherine submitted some of her own work to the Austin Songwriter's Group song writing competition where she won 2nd place in the rock/blues category. As a result, Katherine had the opportunity to record her original, rock and pop masterpieces with Austin producer Stephen Doster. She recently appeared on a show on Austin's newest television station, ME television, as well as Austin's Channel 6 with her band, Kat's Meow, to sing and interview. Kat's Meow recently interviewed on KUT's Saturday morning radio show, Folkways, as well as 107.1 KGSR, and also John Aielli's show, Eklektikos, where they performed several of their popular numbers and are still currently receiving air play. To be privy to the soulful, sweet melodies performed by this young artist, you can find her singing several nights a week with some of the top jazz players in Austin at the venues listed on this page. Freque-a-Thon w/ Afrofreque, Starlynx, and DJ Bigface

Stepping out of a short break to set up another powerful booty-shaking night at Lambert's Downtown BBQ, Afrofreque presents their first Freque-a-Thon event and enlists heavyweight house rockers Starlynx with DJ Bigface to insure another glorious night of funky hip-hop grooves. Freque-a-Thon will take place on November 29th, 2008. Lambert's BBQ is located at 401 W. 2nd St. in downtown Austin. Cover is only $5 for the 21+ funk, soul, and hip-hop lovers in town.

With a amazing band line-up intermingled with Austin's vibrant music scene, it's no surprise that members of Afrofreque are in high-demand for a variety of side projects. Keyboardist Claude 9 recently celebrated the sell-out vinyl release of Viva La Remix, a 4-track dance floor shaker created in collaboration with DJ Manny under the Los Banditos monikur. Claude has also been working with Manny and Bigface on The Black & White Year's East Side Remix, celebrated through a special event on November 15th. And, if that is not enough, check out his solo DJ set at Carlos Santana's Maria Maria restaurant on November 21st.

When his not laying down his lyrical mastery for Afrofreque, MC Tigre Liu can be found as a regular guest at DJ Resinthol's Hump! events held every Friday night at Plush. You may also catch a whiff of his flow through some of DJ Bigface's original products, as well as on tracks by Starlynx. You may not recall the name from the top your mind, but if you were at the Bassnectar show at Antone's last year, you'll remember the madness of Starlynx's opening set at the sold-out show.

No stranger to Austin's funk scene, DJ Resinthol has been holding the grooves steady at Hump! Friday's at Plush with co-creator DJ Paco. Since its enception, Resinthol and Paco have hosted guest appearance by Chicago house music pioneer Boo Williams, as well as special guests including percussionist El Cocinero, Jazz trumpet player Ephraim Owens, and DJ J.J. Lopez.

The November Freque-a-thon introduces a myriad of collaborate project under one roof. Tune in and funk out.
