As he helmed the countless incarnations of Wooden Wand, James Jackson Toth traversed the outskirts of folk with experimental musings, but the Tennessee native saved his best for himself. Toth’s solo debut, Waiting in Vain (Rykodisc), delves soulfully into Southern balladry, unraveling the softer threads of Tom Petty, the Rolling Stones, and Robyn Hitchcock. Seattle duo the Dutchess & the Duke opens by burning through a spectrum of Sixties rock, pop, and folk. – Doug Freeman

We all wish Nas had performed Illmatic front to back last weekend at Emo’s. Credit Wu-Tang’s most lyrical swordsman for giving the people what they want: a live recitation of 1995’s classic Liquid Swords to kick off Emo’s 16th anniversary week. Method Man was smoother, ODB more charismatic, and Ghostface spit more complex slang, but true heads know GZA always had the sharpest tongue. Meth said it best: “We form like Voltron, and GZA happens to be the head.” Locals Zeale and Phranchyze open. – Thomas Fawcett

The Mighty Hannibal has had one hell of a ride. The Atlanta pimp turned junkie turned preacher sped through L.A. in a car captained by Ray Charles, rode an elephant down Broadway, got his ass kicked by Sam Cooke, and swore Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, and James Brown refused to follow him on stage. Texas soul survivors Archie Bell and Barbara Lynn round out this first-class soul revue. – Thomas Fawcett

An insanely ambitious band that stages manic spectacles with relatively little means, Of Montreal has blossomed on the strength of shows that should embarrass most (if not all) other bands of their ilk. more at austin.decider.com
