Mexic-Arte Museum invites Central Texas to view a collection of community altars in remembrance of loved ones. The exhibition is proudly sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, Texas Commission on the Arts, City of Austin, Downtown Austin Alliance, Austin Motel, Austin Friends of Folk Art, Pamela and Michael S. Reese, Austin American-Statesman, Ahora Sí and LAT-TV.
Exhibition:
Artistic homages by Against Drunk Drivers (MADD), American Friends Service Committee, Austin High School ’s Art Club and more are featured within the exhibit. Traditional altars are adorned with offerings (candles, sugar skulls, flowers, and crosses) and images of calaveras (skeletons) engaging in everyday activities. The exhibition will include an life-size installation by Texas A&M University-Kingsville Associate Art Professor Santa Barraza and Eloy Jimenez in the tradition of the Day of the Dead sand paintings of Oaxaca .
Founded in 1980, MADD's mission is to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime and prevent underage drinking. The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) supports the rights and dignity of all people, regardless of their immigration status. Backed by an 89-year history working for peace, justice and reconciliation in troubled areas of the world, the AFSC has worked in Mexico on rural and urban development projects and with migrant farm workers in California since 1940.
