At the Cannes premiere of one of his films, Werner Herzog discovery Bruno S. decided to play his accordion outside the theatre; unfortunately, no one knew how to take this, and the police were called in to arrest him. That pretty much sums up the life of Bruno S., who, after two films with Herzog (THE ENIGMA OF KASPAR HAUSER and STROSZEK), faded into obscurity, never to catch the public eye again. But that wasn't the only rejection in his life: neglected and abused by his prostitute mother, he was diagnosed as insane while still a child, and was sent to an institution with other abandoned or disabled children who were given to the Nazis for experimentation. Thoroughly embittered by these experiences, Bruno expounds on the nature of his estrangement.
