Kenji (Tadanobu Asano) is a Japanese librarian hiding out in Bangkok, leading an orderly life with a place for everything and a surplus of depression that’s made him a suicide fetishist. Noi is a bar girl who may or may not be a hooker, planning to move to Osaka, studying Japanese and grieving for her sister (whom the actress also plays in flashback) who was killed in an accident. The two find themselves drawn to each other as Kenji’s past as a yakuza erupts like molten pus in a series of spontaneously violent incidents that cause him to hole up with Noi in her beach house. The two build a cautious bridge out of their broken English and try to connect, and in a sweetly off-kilter way, they do. But it’s not long before dead bodies attract all the wrong kinds of attention and Kenji realizes that it’s time for Noi to go and for him to do something to keep the wolves at bay.
