Kate Holliday: “Humanism and Modernism” Kate Holliday, Assistant Professor of Art History at Southwestern University, presents “Humanism and Modernism: The Idea of American Art Deco” on Thursday, February 8, at 7 p.m. at the Harry Ransom Center. American art deco is often seen as the ultimate in decadent design, but some American architects took their flamboyant ornament, color, and materials very seriously, promoting their use as a means of maintaining a human element in modern architecture that was becoming increasingly mechanized and technical. Holliday’s lecture explores how skyscrapers, the most American of buildings, were symbols of this humanist approach to architecture in the 1920s. Seating is free, but limited. The event complements the Center’s exhibition The American Twenties, on view through July 29.
