Fickleness, thy name is woman….or is it man? That is “La Dispute” that launches this farcical examination of the true nature of men and women, and the origins of love, lust and infidelity. Although the play is an 18th century French farce, this modern translation owes more to reality TV than the classical Comédie-Française.
To settle the matter of which sex was first unfaithful, an aristocratic couple stages a bizarre yet ingenious experiment – recreating the Garden of Eden in their back garden. They observe from afar as four orphans, two boys and two girls, who have been raised by their servants in complete isolation from the world and each other, are allowed to meet for the first time. One by one boy meets girl, and each couple falls madly in love. That is until the girl sees the other boy, and the boy sees the other girl—and love at first sight gives way to lying eyes and cheating hearts.
