Spanish director Jose Larraz is a master of atmosphere. Working in England on tiny budgets and with casts and crews drawn largely from the sexploitation ghetto, he made the persistent fog and gnarly trees of rural Britain look like an exotic nightmare. And in movies like VAMPYRES, SYMPTOMS and this one he adds a full-blooded, sexually provocative dimension that most British horror movies would only hint at. It’s hard to tell where the sex ends and the horror begins in this thriller about a beautiful model who accidentally witnesses a murder in a mysterious abandoned house. What this movie lacks in plausibility and coherence it more than makes up for with its energetic approach to the fetishism of horror iconography. It’s the kind of movie where a doomed prostitute asks the killer, “Aren’t you even going to take your gloves off?” And we already know the answer in our hearts. Also known as PSYCHO SEX FIEND. (Lars)
